An acquaintance said she tips $20 for a haircut and a very quick blow dry, not styling, at a privately owned salon. That is more than the cost of my haircut alone, but it still made me think that maybe I undertip, so thought I would see what you all thought and change my ways if need be. I go to an inexpensive franchise (Great Clips) for what I think is a basic haircut/trim, choppy long layers, bangs trimmed, no shampoo, no blow dry and style. It costs under $20 and takes about 15 minutes total, if that. I tip $5. Too cheap?
;Have been tipping a little less than I thought; $5, which is between 15 and 20% of cost. Tip for sit-down meals and delivery--usually 20%, sometimes between 15-20%, sometimes over. Occasionally have left a big fat goose-egg for awful/rude service, and a very generous tip when the service was great but the food was lousy.
Heard of somebody who tipped their mechanic--almost fell off my chair when I read that. Have seen styrofoam tip cups in drive-through windows--right next to the sign saying "check your receipt before you drive away; you won't get a refund if your order is wrong without it." That made me laugh. Also have seen tip coffee pots plonked down right in the middle of the check-out counter at a bakery; moved it out of the way, paid for the items and left.
Remember long, long ago working at a "greasy-spoon" restaurant and thinking I'd rather earn a decent wage than pick up money off of dirty tables. Would like to see the gratuity system disappear altogether.
