How much would you tip for a haircut? sm

Posted: Oct 24, 2009

An acquaintance said she tips $20 for a haircut and a very quick blow dry, not styling, at a privately owned salon. That is more than the cost of my haircut alone, but it still made me think that maybe I undertip, so thought I would see what you all thought and change my ways if need be.  I go to an inexpensive franchise (Great Clips) for what I think is a basic haircut/trim, choppy long layers, bangs trimmed, no shampoo, no blow dry and style.  It costs under $20 and takes about 15 minutes total, if that.  I tip $5.  Too cheap?

NO!!! I am just totally joking! That is what I tip when and if I ever get a haircut. These days have been tight. Anyway, I usually tip about 5-7 a haircut. I don't have a regular person so I don't feel obligated to tip more. I heard it is something like 20% to tip them so if your friend is getting like $100 services then she is right on, but if she is getting more than that she is the cheapskate... lol! I guess I am a cheapskate for only tipping $5-10 dollars on a $0 dollar haircut. I HATE TIPPING THEM!!! It makes me so uncomfortable! Crazy as it sounds, I know, maybe I am just crazy!

Don't DO that! LOL! - Am I a cheapo?

Wish I could say you ARE crazy, but I agree with you about being uncomfortable with tipping.

I tend to overtip and that's due to my insecurity that maybe that person won't like me if I don't tip them enough (eyeroll). Yes, I have issues. I will tip at least 20% of the coest and then add on a few bucks after that for good measure.

So apparently, I am a cheapo.... - Kendra

I just tipped $10 on a $100 cut and highlight. Oh well, I do tip waitresses well.

where did you go for $100 cut and highlight? - Snow Bunny

Tiffany's Hair Salon in Manhattan? Ye gads!

As far as tipping goes, I don't know how many people realize that servers only get paid $2.13 per hour, and sometimes they have to split their tips with the hostess and bartender.

actually it was pretty cheap. As far as servers go, I think that depends on where you are. When I was in college 10 years ago, I made $8.50/hour as a waitress. I did have to pay taxes of 15% tips, whether I got that or not, though.

I think you are tipping just fine and link inside agrees. - Tired&CrankyMT

I did a search on the web and came up with hairstylist 15% to 20% as a tip. If your hair cut is $15, a $5 tip is 33%, which is a lot more than the maximum recommended.

When my kids get haircuts, they cost $12 each and I give another $5 to each barber as a tip.

Here's a site I came across:

I tip 5.00 too - OldMT

My haircut is 15.00 and I give her 5.00 tip. I don't think that's bad. It only takes her about 15-20 minutes to cut my hair.

They can take that tipping "recommendation" - Snow Bunny

I just tipped $1 about 10 minutes ago. sm - So cheap I squeek!

I just took my son for a cut and I tipped a dollar. The cut was 10. It took her all of 10 minutes to cut his hair. She did not seem that thrilled, but I don't really care. I am sick of all of these people wanting tips to do their job. When some MD sends me a few bucks extra, I might reconsider. Until then, barbers, drive through workers and the like will just have to take their pay and be happy. I am a generous tipper at restaurants and bars because they work on tips, but this "tip me because I did my job" attitude sucks as far as I'm concerned. Everything is expensive enough without adding a couple bucks to everything.

Bag boy TIPS!!! - hate that

We have a Piggly Wiggly here in town and they use to not let people take out the carts. You have to have some teenager take your groceries out and you had to tip them. One time I literally had NO money and I paid with a card and I told the bagger that I would have to get him double next time... anyways he walked about 10 steps away and started talking to another bagger about how I was a b-word that stiffed him on a tip! So screw them!!! I never tipped after that.

I think we MT's deserve tips. - nm

OK. MT tips.

Don't slouch when you type.

Make sure to use a wrist rest.

Get up and stretch every hour or so.

I know. Ha ha ha.

We have Ukrop's here that do the same in terms of having the bagger take out your groceries (though you can decline), however they are not allowed to accept tips. Your store should be the same, I would ask management. This is a service they provide for your convenience not so the bagger can make extra money on top of his hourly wage. I would have definitely reported that rude kid and what he said about you, and stopped him in his tracks for being such a jerk. The only things we tip is my DH's hairdresser (I never go), and at restuarants (eat-in and take-out), and and that is it, cannot think of anything else. My in-laws are funny, on the rare occasion that we all go out together, about once a year, his parent's pay and they get out their little tip card and do 15 percent exactly, no more, no less.

At the commissary on base... - Kendra

they don't pay the baggers, they only work for tips. After talking to them, I think that they make more than baggers in other stores, but I feel guilty because I don't often carry cash, so I have to pull out cash to pay the baggers. Once, I gave the bagger a $10 bill and asked if he had change and he said no and just took off with my 10. Now, if that guy is there, I go through his line and don't ever tip.

We always made sure we had enough to tip them... but $10 that is extreme! Maybe he thought you were pre-paying!

OMG - I had forgotten about those commissary baggers. I'd much rather wheel my own stuff out and load it into my car. I overtipped them too (my insecurity).

BTW, if there are any military people here stationed at the sub base in Groton, you HAVE to go eat at a place called Bella Fiore on route 32. That food is to die for.

I also wonder how employers managed to get the customer to assume responsibility for their employees' wages: "I pay my staff squat, so it's up to you to supplement their income."

Thanks! sm - Am I a cheapo?

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks everyone! I thought I read somewhere that 15% to 20% was standard, but there always seems to be an exception to the rules and just wanted to be sure.

And, thanks for weighing in on tipping in general. I really wish we could do away with the tip system, but no way will a lot of business owners/corporations let that happen. They would have to actually pay their employees a reasonable wage--gasp!. (Off the soap box now.)

Hope you all have a good hair day tomorrow!

I usually tip $5 for a haircut. My haircut is around $21. Since we're on the topic of haircuts, has anyone had a "reconstructive treatment" that some of the places are offering? My stylist mentioned it to my in the middle of my haircut last time, and she says it makes a world of difference. Just wondering if anyone has tried this and the results. It's not a take-home treatment; it's a treatment they do in the salon. Any ideas?

Have been tipping a little less than I thought; $5, which is between 15 and 20% of cost. Tip for sit-down meals and delivery--usually 20%, sometimes between 15-20%, sometimes over. Occasionally have left a big fat goose-egg for awful/rude service, and a very generous tip when the service was great but the food was lousy.

Heard of somebody who tipped their mechanic--almost fell off my chair when I read that. Have seen styrofoam tip cups in drive-through windows--right next to the sign saying "check your receipt before you drive away; you won't get a refund if your order is wrong without it." That  made me laugh. Also have seen tip coffee pots plonked down right in the middle of the check-out counter at a bakery; moved it out of the way, paid for the items and left.

Remember long, long ago working at a "greasy-spoon" restaurant and thinking I'd rather earn a decent wage than pick up money off of dirty tables. Would like to see the gratuity system disappear altogether.

Me too! It is so unfair! I argue with my husband - sm

about this issue frequently. I do not think the work for a waiter at an expensive restaurant is that much different than what one is doing at a cheap restaurant, so the whole paying by a percentage of the bill thing seems off to me. I know it is important to leave a tip because they get paid so little, but I would rather leave one standard tip for poor service, another for good service, and another for excellent service, no matter what the price of the meal.

about $3 for a $15 cut/dry, ?20%. - nm

Worst Haircut Ever!!Feb 05, 2011
I had an appointment to get my hair cut yesterday.  When I got there, they told me that my stylist was in the hospital and they had tried to call me but no one ever answered the phone.  I told her that my answering machine would have picked up but she said it never did.  They said that someone else could do it and I came so close to saying I wanted to reschedule but I was there, had not washed my hair that morning and my bangs were hanging in my eyes.  They told me that this ...
