How much do you tip your hairdresser

Posted: May 31, 2012

This weekend my hairdresser is going to be doing a weave on me.  I love my gray hair coming in, so she said she could do a weave.  Never had one before and unsure how much I should tip her.  I love my hairdresser and know she will do a good job, just this is the first time so unsure what a proper tip would be. - Thanks

My hairdresser owns the shop and it's a one-person operation, so no tip necessary, at least that is my understanding. When I have gone elsewhere, I tip 15-20% of total bill. I'm curious about other responses on this too.

I usually do this - sm

I have crazy curly hair and a TON of it. I usually tip around $7 an hour on top off bill, so if I go in for a dye, cut and style, it usually takes the poor girl 3 hours to do my hair, so I will add on at least $20 as a tip. If she just gives me a cut, and takes 45 minutes to an hour, then only $6-7.

cut & color, about 1-1/2 hrs, 20% tip - nm

I give her a $20, refuse change and tell her "lunch is on me today." She is very versatile, super talented and always does an awesome job. Around the holidays and when she's getting ready to go on vacay, I leave her an extra $20 on the station under a gift bottle of perfume at Christmas and/or a book to take with her on her trip.

I Tip 18-20% on her price. - She'll Throw in an Eyebrow Wax Now and Then

a color for me yesterday that ended up taking almost 4 hours and then only charged me $50. I tipped her $25 and still probably got out of it cheaper than if I had gone somewhere else.

Age-old Question; To Tip, Or Not To Tip The Hairdresser?May 30, 2015
One girl did everything for me, fairly small shop, and I think she's the main hairdresser there.  Definitely not the owner, probably not a manager. She washed, cut, spritzed, and braided my hair to finish. No special or extra service.  I had an appointment, wasn't a walk-in or last minute work-in.   Standard price $35, but she gave a discount this time at $25.   The sales slips, as always, had a tip section, but I never know if I am supposed to tip o ...
