I thought my hubby was taking care of the laundry, just forgetting to bring it up - but when I went down and checked for myself I opened the washer and - - - Whew!  It was awful!  How do you get the stench out?  It's been sitting in there for three days.  It's a dark wash so I can't use bleach.  Or is it time for new clothes for all of us?

try running it through again with at least warm/hot water, detergent and some baking soda. Hope it works!

1 cup of white vinegar added to the wash water in addition to the normal detergent usually helps - also takes out the stink in gym clothes. I've done this a lot and it doesn't leave any residual vinegar odor on the clothing, but you may need to wash twice this way if the smell is really bad.

I second the vinegar suggestion - Happy MT Robin

I use vinegar in all of my laundry now - a cup in the wash and a cup in the rinse. It makes a huge difference. It helps get rid of amy kind of "musty' odor that laundry may get, even when it's perfectly clean.

I chose the vinegar simply because I had vinegar and was out of baking soda. I filled the washer, put in about a cup and a half of vinegar (a large load) and detergent, let it agitate for awhile, then let it soak like that overnight. This morning I sent it through a regular cycle and it smells clean and fresh! I am so relieved (as is my son - his favorite shirt was in there!).

We always use vinegar in our laundry along with the detergent to get any sweaty smells out or if we have to rewash a load if we leave it in our washer too long. It has worked for us. If it has been in there for 3 days I suggest putting maybe 2 cups of vinegar or maybe even more.

I've been with my furry friend for nearly 17 years.  I cannot smell a thing, but my neighbor says the place reeks.  I recently read a detective novel by Ridley Pearson.  In it, the character who is the police pathologist recommends mopping with tomato juice to get rid of the smell of catpee.  I know this isn't where you look for this kind advice, but I wonder if it wasn't just filler commentary and might actually help.  Three years ...
