Have you finalized your menus?

Posted: Dec 10, 2009

I've started cooking breakfast for us and my dad and step mom. We go to my mom's on Christmas Eve.

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure what we're having except for hash brown casserole. I'm thinking pork tenderloin, biscuits, gravy and something sweet. Maybe some cinnamon rolls. This particular recipe... http://www.southernplate.com/2009/11...html#more-6249

Milk and juice to drink. None of us drink coffee.

Yes I have. We'll be having beer - just me/hmmm

We don't have menu's here. Just DH and me. I'll make a ham and potatoes and other stuff. Nothing fancy, just filling.

It all depends on hubby that day - Southern lady

Know for sure that morning, daughter will be over and we are having country ham, grits for her, biscuits and coffee. If hubby is here that day (he might go to family dinner, I am staying home that day spending time with daughter)he will fix dinner and we will have turkey, ham, collards and who knows. Now if only daughter and I for the afternoon will fix some shrimp pasta as she really likes and that is what we will have. The menu is totally whether or not he is at home. I am fixing some sugar cookies I have here and putting some frosting on those. We are ordering German chocolate cake from Savannah cake place for sweets.

Mmmmm that sounds good - I had grits once - just me/hmmm

I had grits when I went to basic training in South Carolina. I really liked them. Never had collards. I imagine them to be like spinach or swiss chard. If so I would like them. We just had turkey for t-giving, so will do a ham, plus I get a pot of ham and beans after that out of it. Which reminds me that we'll have corn muffins with the ham and potatoes. And think I'll try my hand at making a home made pie. Although the german chocolate cake sounds excellent. Makes me Miss Germany more and more.
Southern and never had grits in my life - Southern lady

But my daughter and son have and since daughter will be here, she has already requested them. In my southern town whenever we went out for breakfast, never served grits but instead with meat, eggs sliced tomatoes. Collards can tend to be a little bitter. Hubs cooked some the other day and little bitter so he added more water. He is the cook in our family.

i would like to have a traditional goose - but none to be found!

I could have duck, but it is kind of pricey here! Goose was the traditonal bird of christmas until the American settlers found out that turkey was everywhere and easier to kill! I HOPE I DON'T GO BROKE MAKING DINNER!!! I went to the store today and everything was so damn expensive!!!

Talking about turkeys, get this - Gobble, gobble

Watching TV last night and saw a place like a home for wayward turkeys. People apparently bought to have them for their Thanksgiving dinner and instead, they say turkeys make very good pets, got fond of the turkeys and would not have them killed to be eaten. Now here all those turkeys walking around in the, I guess turkey humane society? Have you had goose before and do you like it? Never had myself nor duck, sorry just could not do Donald in.

Dinner for the whole family - Midwest MT

Our Christmas dinner will consist of a big Ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, green bean casserole, mixed fruit, salad meat/cheese/veggie tray before dinner, variety of desserts (cookies, cereal treats, covered pretzels, pie) and usually milk/soda/coffee to drink. Whoever hosts the dinner has to make the meat and potatoes with the rolls and then each family member has to pitch in one thing out of the rest.

I was able to adopt my granddaughter yesterday and I really feel a huge weight off my shoulders!  I wanted to share my story because I know there are others going through a similar situation, but don't talk about it.  I'm not sharing because I want a pat on the back; I'm just happy today.
