Dishwasher

I really want a dishwasher (I rent), but the portable ones advertised locally go really fast.  I am considering buying a countertop portable dishwasher.  Has anyone used one of these?  Do they work well?

I had a Danby countertop portable dishwasher that looked like a huge microwave with a dial. Considering I used it daily, sometimes 2-3 times a day, I'd have to say it was a great machine. I've had some problems with it that were easily fixed through the years.

When the inner window popped off for no reason, I sealed it back in place with caulk used for sealing tile in the bathtub. It worked perfect after that. Then the rubber seal along the bottom of the door wore off/wore down and the machine started leaking water from the bottom of the door when running. I replaced it with a sealing strip and again, it was back to normal. Sadly though, just recently the heating element on that machine died and I had to put the machine to rest. We're talking 6+ years of daily use.

I just bought myself another Danby, the newer computerized model (link below). I love having a dishwasher, but I'm still not sure if I love this computerized model as much as I did the old model with the dial. lol

The dial model ran for roughly 40 minutes and I knew for sure when it was done because the dial would go all around and stop at OFF.

The computerized model's cycles run for 2 hours (short wash is 70 minutes). When finished, it's supposed to beep then blank display, but even 4 or 6 hours later, the display is still flashing the cycle: P1, P2, P3, P4 or P5, so I never know if it's really finished or not. Lol I keep re-reading the booklet trying to see if I'm just dense and not understanding something, but so far I still keep coming up with beeps and blank display.

Anyhow, that mystery aside, I would definitely recommend it.

Just do yourself a favor - Shop around for the best price figuring in shipping and tax, because I've seen them with $150 price difference depending where you buy it from.

I will check that out. I found a few on ebay, but wasn't sure if it would be worth it or not. I will have to shop around for prices.

Okay, well not a complete newbie - we've had a dishwasher for a year, now.  We've always used the same powdered Cascade and it's always worked well, but over the last couple of weeks we're getting a thick white residue over everything.  Any idea what the problem could be or how to fix it? ...

Vinegar In The Dishwasher Worked!Jun 11, 2010
I've been using a shotglass full of vinegar a night in my dishwasher for four nights, now, and the residue has reduced by, I'd say, 75%.  I'll keep doing that until my Cascade runs out, and then it's onto another brand.  I guess you go cheap, you get cheap.  But thanks, whomever it was that gave me that tip! ...
