the boat, presuming it has an engine, take a boat safety course, make sure all children are wearing life vests/jackets, obey all water signs (low speed near docks, no wake zones, etc.), do not drive drunk (boat or car) as you will and can be arrested for this. Use common sense basically.
Stay off them unless you personally have taken a - boating safety course.

Boats are inherently very dangerous. The line between life and death is extremely thin on a boat. The poster above is correct -- wear a life jacket.
As an experienced boater, I hesitate to get in anyone's power boat unless I know their skills well. I would not allow my children on anyone's boat unless I were there.
I see unsafe boating all the time and watch the Coast Guard searching for victims a couple of times each year.
Sailboats are a little safer, I think. Their operators are trained better.

Everyone should wear a life jacket. A friend was knocked into the water unconscious when another boat hit theirs. She came to while she was under the water, was able to surface and then save her dad, who was still unconscious. You can get hypothermia and become unresponsive in the Great Lakes or other large northern lakes.
Check the weather. Last year an area sailboater died when struck by lightning. High winds can swamp your boat. Make sure you have extra gas and perhaps a backup motor, emergency paddles or whatever for your conditions. Make sure someone knows where you are.
A cell phone within range of a tower or marine-band radio a good idea.
Sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, first aid kit, wire cutters if you are fishing, and plenty of water to drink and some snacks.

It is the same dirty strategy they used to smear John Kerry. I guess they never learned to play fair and theyhave no integrity. Just smears and name calling. ...
