Ants, ants and more ANTS! They are everywhere!

Posted: Jun 4, 2010

It's like they can smell my coke or my lemonade.  If I walk away from my desk, they will come out in droves to attack my glass or coke can!  I don't know where they are coming from.  They just appear out of thin air it seems!  I don't leave food out or anything like that.  It doesn't matter how spotless my kitchen is, I find them in my sink.  I'm losing my mind.  I have kids and pets so I don't like to use any toxic chemicals, but these ants are making me crazy.

It might make you feel better to know that ants are no cause for worry about germs anyway. I listen to a lot of science podcasts and learned that ants are actually clean (have some sort of antibacterial properties). They must think they have made a big discovery hiking around your kitchen and desk areas. : )

I just found this on the web, since I'm guessing they'll bug you even if you know they aren't germy: : )

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Sounds crazy, but try vinegar! Fill a squirt bottle with plain old cheap white vinegar, and squirt it anyplace you've seen ants (kitchen counters, windowsills, etc) and let it dry. It's non-toxic, won't harm anything, and the smell will go away in just a couple of minutes. It worked for me!

ΓΆ€ΒΆ I have a suggestion for the ant problem; plain old cinnamon. I put in or at the site of the ant invasion, they back off quick!

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Black pepper is a nonlethal, poison free, cheap, and safe way to get rid of ants - sprinkle the black pepper where you see them congregating and watch 'them scatter. Follow them to where they're exiting - which is the same spot they're entering in at - and sprinkle the pepper at that spot to keep them from coming back in. It's safe to use in your cabinets, on windowsills, near your pets and kids, around food, etc.

ΓΆ€ΒΆ I have a book with several tips for the use of apple cider vinegar. One of them is getting rid of ants. Make a mixture of 50/50 water and vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the surface with the solution several times a day. Ants guide themselves with their scent. Vinegar has a natural chemical that alters ants' scent and which ants avoid.

Orkin has stuff that is safe for both. I have a bug contract with them, since I am not originally from the deep south and there are a LOT of bugs here. I finally had enough!

Still, my landlord recently had the basement of this apartment treated with Orange Oil, which they say is upposed to drive away termites and other critters, but not be toxic or harm the water supply. I don't know if that's true, but it might be worth checking out.

ant situation - been there

If you can possibly find where they are coming from that would be good, but try putting some cinnamon along the periphery of the house or room. Supposedly they hate it and will not cross it. Maybe try it around the Coke can to see if it works first. It is supposed to be a natural deterent. Good luck. DH and I had to go around our whole house and seal everything but we finally have no ants.

ANTS!May 02, 2011
I am really hoping to get some good tips here.  I am having a real problem with what we in the Midwest call sugar ants, really small and black.  It seems like they all just appear one day and I have tried half a dozen things (ant poison, ant traps, baby powder, vinegar, etc) and nothing has worked for very long.  They are about to drive me crazy and I find them all over the house, not just the kitchen, which is disgusting!  I was wondering of any one has some good things ...
