I was having a conversation with my cousin recently, and she didn't know what the words "maternal" and "paternal" meant, had never heard them before. She's a freshman in college, graduated high school with high honors, was in Honor Society throughout high school.

Seems like general knowledge to me and proves what they are not teaching in school these days.
