Calling it a 'cultural norm' does NOT mean - he condoned it

One would need to hear the full discussion and to understand the context to ascribe any meaning to that statement. You can't take snippets and then ask students who they think said it because apparently they didn't understand what was said in the first place. Lousy and biased journalism is what's at play here.
