I don’t think anyone expected Trump to know how to handle the virus scientifically. He had his Pandemic Response Team to update and advise. I think he did a good job initially in his press conference updates. Not Trump's fault that CDC tests were flawed—twice. The result of that debacle put the US in a position of playing catch up, though.

It’s at that point when the numbers starting shooting up that Trump went off the rails a bit. I think he was struggling internally with the numbers, the economy crashing, stimulus from the Fed, etc., maybe realizing that this might be something he wouldn’t be able to control. He is used to control. This is when I started to observe a sort of denial on his part. Wouldn’t wear a mask, wasn’t really socially distancing, tweeting to Americans to get back out and open things up, while numbers rose. He set the tone, willingly or unwillingly, for there to be two camps in this pandemic; those who sheltered/masked and those who would not. Then the numbers shot through the roof. This is where the sentiment of this being all Trump's fault comes from. Is it ALL his fault? Of course not.

Other countries have endured the same devastation we have. Their economies are hurting and they mourn their dead same as us. They aren’t criticized as much as Trump is (though one who comes to mind is the Brazilian president) because our per capita is higher than any other country’s and our ability to get the nation’s numbers to take a downturn has been slower. As the US, we are looked upon as a leader in scientific and medical advances, and we’ve come off as a failure. The CDC and FDA have lost their credibility, which now is resulting in a mistrust over vaccines.

Sorry this is long winded, but it’s a complicated situation. :)
