I remember hearing "workin' like (whatever) of color" when I growing up. Still say it. I'm not so far removed from slave and American Indian ancestors. Not one of their descendants ever blamed failure on their skin color, or used it to succeed.

One of them in post-Emancipation years taught black children to read and write. That was very brave of her. The Democrat Party had made black literacy a crime, and after Emancipation continued to punish blacks for being able to read and any whites who taught them.
