back 1 block around the perimeter of the church for preventive measures since part of St. John's Church had been set on fire yet again the night before the protest. They didn't want people that close to the church again for obvious reasons. Also, some of the protesters had begun throwing objects at the Park Service prior to being cleared from the area. So clearly some of the protesters were not so peaceful as the media would like everyone to believe.
Pres Trump walked over there to pay his respects to a very significant part of American history. Was it just a photo op? Well, he is the President of the United States and that in and of itself will draw media attention to any location he visits.
