What message of hope did Ford convey? He assumed office when Nixon resigned, pardoned him, told New York City to drop dead when they were in dire financial straits, served less than a year and lost the election to Jimmy Carter. JFK and LBJ were both pretty positive influences as well. Johnson got stuck with Vietnam but he is responsible for Medicare and many other social programs still in place, as well as the Civil Rights Act.
