Bernie isn’t hopelessly naive. He knew darn good and well the reality behind the Potemkin villages he was being shown and touting later. He just refuses to admit it.
You should also understand that socialists are not at all concerned with standards of living. They are concerned with ensuring that no one has more than anyone else (except the leaders of course). That's not "fair"
