The Founding Fathers didn't establish a democracy, but a republic. It was included as a key element in the Constitution for a reason.
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist only until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess (defined as a liberal gift) out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a dictatorship” (J.S. Mill, On Liberty).
Rule by simple majority creates the real danger of disenfranchising the rights of the minority. The founders studied the history of ancient governments. They made clear their sound reasons for preferring a republic, because is better safeguards the people’s liberties.
