The media gets offended when Trump says they're the enemy of the people, but how many times have we heard someone on the Left say "Trump is a racist and anyone who supports him is racist." That's a direct attack on Trump supporters. That's why we're seeing these attacks on people who support the president.
There's always a small number of individuals in society that are unstable. People who will act out violently against others. The media/Left is priming those unstable people to enact violence against Trump supporters.
This is different from previous presidents. The rightwing media incited hate towards Obama, but the crazies on the right never got a chance to act on that. It was the same thing with Bush. The left incited hatred towards Bush, but never his supporters.
This is the same way Democrats acted when the Republicans took away their slaves and during the civil rights era. They demean you publicly and incite hatred so unstable individuals (there are always some) will act out with violence against you.
