renal failure - been there Posted: Jan 31st, 2020 - 5:27 pm In Reply to: Renal failure - Anon
I too hung in there at upper end of normal creatinine for 8 years, then an abrupt rise in a year. I'm now at GFR of 17-19. I have spent a fortune seeing nephrologists and having expensive lab tests all the while. They are good for monitoring labs and prescribing antihypertensives, but in general I became very disillusioned with that whole process and did a bunch of reading medical journals.
What I think I know now is drink lots of fluids, avoid all additives in foods and drinks, reduce your meat intake, as it converts to creatinine, look up all drugs you are taking or prescribed to see if they are kidney friendly. I am not as certain about this, but I no longer eat a high protein diet in an effort to regain my strength, as your kidneys will waste any excess protein in your urine.
I no longer see nephrologists, as I am at the point where we are going to be talking dialysis if this GFR rate gets below 15, and, like you, MT profession has made me a pauper. I doubt the value of a life on dialysis. Do your research on all aspects of this nasty problem, and good luck to you.
