I can’t recall which senator asked this question, but it was, (in essence) “How many regulations, not laws, but regulations, require jail sentences? Also, at what level of government are these regulations set?”

The DOJ responded that there are thousands of regulations at all levels of government requiring jail time from violators. There is no way to assemble a list.

In Florida, for example, you can get a year in prison for catching too many Red Fish or disturbing tortoise eggs. If I recall there is also a $15,000 fine for both.

These regulations are not written by the legislatures and passed into law. They are written by a hired functionary who sits at a desk in a cubicle somewhere in the bowels of a bureaucracy, just like the EPA.
