Apparently, it's not uncommon in El Paso for boys names Roberto/Robert to be called Beto. I had an odd nickname as a kid too. My brother, who was 3 when I was born, couldn't say my name, so called me Sis, which morphed into Sissie. Everyone called me either Sis or Sissie, even the neighborhood kids and all my cousins. Sometimes people have no control over the nicknames they are given. I'm pretty sure Robert O'Rourke didn't give himself the nickname Beto to pander to Hispanics.
