the populations have intermingled and no one ethnicity has a majority (or a super-majority) in the area. When the British divided up the Middle East after World War I, they forgot to establish a nation for the Kurds. Today's conflict is just a remaining echo of that oversight. Oopsie!

The Kurds need and deserve their own nation. I'm not sure that such a new nation could encompass all the areas shown in orange on the map here. The Kurdish nation should be centered on the border area of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Kurds who want to live in their own nation will move there. People of other ethnicities who are in that area now can move back into the other nations.

Simple, eh?
