Hospice Volunteering - From Question for You All

Posted: Oct 6th, 2019 - 12:19 pm

I received some very kind responses here to my dilemma with one of the people I see in my volunteer hospice "work." I so appreciate that. If any of you are interested in volunteering, I just wanted you to know that there are many things you can do, including taking a particular talent you have and applying it (like music therapy). I don't know if all hospice organizations are the same, but the one I work for has a whole slew of things you can apply to your visits.

As an aside, if you are not comfortable working one-on-one with patients and/or their families (it's not for everbody) but you want to serve, they always need people to help with office duties. You are not required to do the sad side of this work, but you would want to let them know before doing any training.

The office I work for has the following volunteer positions that complement regular visits. Gardening, flower arranging, making reminiscent collages, arts, crafts, creating memory books or journals, music, storytelling, clowns, and dance. They also have pet therapy. Your pet would be screend by hospice. It is amazing how beneficial this can be to someone. You are not required to do any of them, but some volunteers want to apply a particular talent they have. Again, I don't know if all hospice organizations do all of that.

It is not a heavy commitment. If you choose to volunteer in the nursing homes, you are not committed to a particular time or day. If you are providing respite care for a family (caregiver has doctor appointment, has to go shopping, just needs a break, etc.), it is a courtesy to the caregiver not back out of that unless you have an urgent matter. I chose nursing homes because I didn't want to be committed to day or time for most things.

I chose the Faith Board because I browse it on and off, and what I see is an incredible outpouring of support and genuine caring on here that would serve so many people in a positive way. I also chose this board because I am confident nobody is going to report that I am soliciting people to do hospice volunteering.;) You'll notice I did not name the organization I work for.

Thank you to all of you who serve in their community, no matter what it is.
