Unfortunately, "playing dirty" as you say is all we have to look forward to. The news media only makes money if we click and watch and they have a 24/7 time slot to fill. They always run with the worst interpretation they can think of and they rarely tell the whole story or even a fair story.
The media continues to give us what they've determined we want.
