The mantras "immigration is good for the economy" and "business needs immigration" are a sleight of hand. What they really mean is that immigration allows certain individuals and sectors of "the economy" to reap windfall profits from cheap immigrant labor, while large swathes of Americans (who never seem to figure in the political establishment's definition of "the economy") get disenfranchised.
