The man wrote an 80 page political manifesto detailing EXACTLY how his act was political -including who inspired him and how. He explicitly said Trump was a cultural hero for him and how specific American conservatives shaped his ideology.
Oh, I forgot, he must just be "mentally ill" cuz he's white and killed people who are not.
