Ocasio-Cortez Says Capitalism is “Irredeemable” in SXSW Speech

Freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez never misses a chance to either prove to the world that she’s an extreme leftist or that she’s got a few screws loose (or, as is often the case, both simultaneously), and this weekend’s appearance at the South by Southwest festival was no exception.

The New York socialist drew quite the crowd to hear her speak on stage at the Austin gathering, and we have no doubt that the enthusiastic millennials there to see her are fully enchanted with her confused musings on the economy. It is the question of whether or not that enthusiasm spreads wide and far enough to actually win national elections that has us intrigued. Certainly, it seems at this point that most 2020 Democrat presidential candidates are banking on the answer being yes.

Well, if Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, and all the rest are planning to nod approvingly about every kooky thing Ocasio-Cortez says from now on, they’ll have plenty to contend with after her latest public appearance.

“Capitalism is an ideology of capital –- the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit,” Ocasio-Cortez said. And because that focus on profit comes at the expense of both people and the environment, she said: “So to me, capitalism is irredeemable.”

Michael Moore is surely rubbing his hands together like a mad fool…but is this kind of talk really going to expand the party’s base? Or shrink it to the point where Donald Trump can skip the debates next year and still win the election in a landslide?

We’re almost afraid to know the answer.

“We’re reckoning with the consequences of putting profit above everything else in society,” she continued. “And what that means is people can’t afford to live. For me, it’s a question of priorities and right now I don’t think our model is sustainable.”

So one can argue about the various limits we put on capitalism as a society, and that’s an argument that can take place across party lines to some degree. But it seems that Ocasio-Cortez is either confused about what we’ve been talking about economically for the last, oh, hundred years or so, or…she doesn’t actually know what capitalism is. That seems difficult to believe, seeing as she claims to be an economics major, but then again, it’s difficult to believe this woman is actually as popular as she is. Her fans are seriously the same people that talk about what an idiot Trump is?

Very peculiar. Very strange.
