The King County Medical Examiner's Office says a 59-year-old man died of exposure at a light-rail station in Seattle.

The Seattle Times reports that Derek C. Johnson was found sometime before 5:30 a.m. Thursday. He had no permanent address.

It was the first hypothermia-related death reported in King County since a cold snap arrived in the region early this week.

Officials and homeless-service providers have been working to try to ensure the survival of thousands of people living unsheltered in King County with a snowstorm expected to hit the region. That's meant opening shelters and paying for hotel rooms for those who need help.

Seattle planned to keep its emergency overnight shelter at Seattle Center's Exhibition Hall open through at least Sunday night.

In St. Louis they are closing shelters (to inspect) while it is 10-20 degrees outside. Nowhere to go.
