citizens complied with the law, but the communists and Nazis did not. Anytime there was a killing with a weapon the media propagandized it to use as gun confiscation like the American media does now.
When France fell to the Nazis, the New York Times reported that the French were deprived of rights such as free speech and firearm possession just as the Germans had been. Frenchmen who failed to surrender their firearms within 24 hours were subject to the death penalty.
There's nothing new under the sun.
