She certainly did claim Cherokee heritage and categorized herself as minority status, Native American, to gain an affirmative action edge over qualified applicants for a teaching job at Harvard U. It was proven that--at best--she could have only 1/64 and at worst 1/1024 Native American heritage---and that is less than most Americans. So her phony claims backfired on her. Many Americans have family folklore about Native American ancestry way,way back in their family history, but would never in a million years be ridiculous enough (or deceptive and opportunistic enough, like Elizabeth Warren) to refer to themselves as "Native American" even in casual conversation, let alone on a job application! This and her subsequent ridiculous spin on things is a truly hilarious (well-deserved) backfire on a deceptive, opportunistic politician!
