Everything I've read says that Republicans are recommending charges against Steele for lying to the FBI. Isn't that what they got Flynn for? How could they get Flynn and then let Steele off the hook? (It's not like Steele is running for the Dem nomination or doing anything that would allow the Justice Department to look the other way. Clinton style! You know?)

Smearing Steele is interesting. What would they smearing him for? Colluding with the Russians? Paying the Russians in order to sway an election? Isn't that what Dems have been smearing Pubs with for the past year and a half? Simpson wants to spare Steele the "unfair" smearing Simpson caused Pubs to endure?

Your proposal is fascinatingly partisan. Even so, wouldn't the best way to do that be to testify publicly? All the news channels would cover it, Steele would be instantly exonerated. No?
