Moore would have been an albatross around their neck. Now Jones will have to reveal his true colors, and doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being reelected in 2020.
To try to avoid this, the Democrats might let him vote occasionally with the Republicans so that he appears to be a "centrist." That's fine too - and it won't fool Alabamians. Give them a better Republican candidate in 2020 and no Democrat stands a chance.
Either way, this is an exquisitely excellent outcome - but not for the Democrats. This was one Republican who was pulling for Jones as the best thing that could happen last night. It will pose some difficulties for Trump, true - but not insurmountable ones, and nothing like the disaster that would have followed a Moore victory.
