They came over to a new country and a new land that they were unfamiliar with. They did NOT know how to HUNT!
Guess what? If you only know how to fish, unless you're an experienced ice fisherman you are only going to be fishing seasonally in Massachusetts. So, if you can't hunt that means only seasonal animal protein that must be in enough abundance to have some left to preserve to last you through those lean months.
Given the above, coupled with the socialist/communal setup that they established, it's no wonder they starved! They were no doubt relying on all their religious "faith" instead of self-sufficiency.
