Nothing changes unless we change it - Sm

Posted: Oct 2nd, 2017 - 10:50 pm

I'm keeping this reminder in a Gmail draft and reissuing it until I don't need to (or until Gmail goes away).

Regarding the shooting in [state], please understand one basic thing:

As long as nothing relevant changes about our laws or our nation, nothing relevant about our shootings will change.

If you are OKAY with that, then do nothing and assume that people will continue to die needlessly in mass shootings.

If you are NOT OKAY with that, then do something.

"But the solution isn't more gun control!"

Then what is the solution?

Don't talk about what you think won't fix the problem (or what you don't want to fix the problem because it would be ideologically inconvenient for you).

Talk about what will fix the problem. And try to fix it. That way, if you were right and the solution was for absolutely everyone to be armed, including my 3-year-old daughter, we can just be the only country on earth where that solution actually works.

And if you were wrong, we can say okay, that didn't work, so how about we try the opposite?

But fundamentally, when nothing changes, nothing changes.

If you don't take food out of the freezer, it stays frozen.

If you don't change anything about a nation in which shootings are common, shootings continue to be common.
