can't afford to feed their own children three square meals a day. In most cases, it's got nothing to do with "can't be bothered to feed their own children." There was a few years of my life where I used the free lunch program for my kid and I was quite appreciative of that. Maybe you were able to afford to send the lunch, but I wasn't and many others aren't.

By the way, I was working several jobs at a that time just to keep a roof over our heads so my taxes were paying for those free lunches too.
