Trump's Tax Accountant Claims He's the Loophole-Exploiting Genius, Not Trump If you've seen one of Donald Trump's made men on TV in the last week or so, you've probably seen them refer to The Don as a "genius." Rudy Giuliani and the rest of the crew are all hands on deck following the New York Times report that Trump lost nearly $1 billion in 1995 and could have used a mechanism in the tax code to avoid paying federal income tax for up to 18 years thereafter. Every indication is that Trump did use that mechanism, and Giuliani and Co. want you to know that makes him a genius businessman and a tax law expert. Except Trump didn't even compile his taxes himself. He may not have even known a damn thing about the scheme he pulled—at least according to his accountant at the time. Jack Mitnick is listed as the compiler on the tax return leaked to the Times, and Jack Mitnick says he should get the credit for this grand plan: "I did all the tax preparation," Mitnick told Inside Edition. "He never saw the product until it was presented to him for signature." He added: "I'm the one who did all the work." "He's a genius" is a much better line than "he was still rich enough to hire a good accountant." (In fact, Mitnick was the Trump family accountant since the '60s, so Trump didn't even have a good eye for talent. His dad did.) You can see why they keep pushing it, even if they can't possibly believe it. ;
