TN becoming a theocracy?

Posted: Feb 17, 2015

Um, NO!

Tennessee state Rep. James VanHuss (R) introduced a resolution that would add a new line to the state constitution acknowledging God, The Tennessean reported.

House Joint Resolution 71 would add a line reading, "We recognize that our liberties do not come from governments, but from Almighty God, our Creator and Savior."

VanHuss' colleague, Rep. Jerry Sexton (R) also introduced a bill last week that would make the Holy Bible the state book.

I wonder if posts like this are giving ISIS the edge? - Just wondering...

I guess there is a lot of anti-Christian sentiment in this country, too.

Not anti-Christian at all... - different poster

Just anti-theocracy.

A lot of liberals come off as anti-Christian - Constitutionalist

and it is sending a message. If the liberals don't like the Constitution (like your president) nor the principles on which it was founded, maybe this is not the country for them.
Question for you... - sm

Do you have any objection to setting up a form of government based on evangelical Christianity?
My objection is NOT following the Constitution as it was written. - Quit trying to change it.

Follow the laws. Period.
Follow what laws? - ?
[ In Reply To ..]
Are there laws that say US citizens must practice Christianity or we must leave the country?
"Laws" are sometimes wrong, and should - be challenged when they are.

You bet I object - Empirelady

I object a LOT.

What do you mean, based on evangelical Christianity? Only those who are EC's are allowed to run for office? Of course, any nonbelievers (or even just those who object to such a premise) would immediately be disenfranchised in some way, shape, or form.

Our constitution was set up so exactly this type of scenario would NOT happen.

If this were to occur, we, as a country, are no better those in which the Taliban are in control. Do you really want that?

Which particular EC sect have you decided the country must follow? Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, nondenominational? Lord above knows THEY all disagree on certain beliefs, so how would you chose? Do we have to become card-carrying "good Christians?" What happens if one doesn't believe, or committed, I guess, a sin (as opposed to just breaking a standard law)? Jail, public whippings? Or, perhaps they would be ineligible for any public services. Truly, what is the end goal here, aside from ECs' belief that we must all believe as they do?
I think you misunderstood me, Empirelady. - sm

I agree with you! I was asking Constitutionalist what she felt about setting up our government based on evangelical Christianity, not that I condoned it. My guess is that, despite her name, she would approve. I don't recall the part of the Constitution that sets up the US as a Christian nation. I see she subscribes to the fallacy that the US was founded as a "Christian nation." I chose evangelical Christianity because that seems to be the sect that is well represented in office, particularly in the red states. I would just like to get the point of view of someone who thinks a theocracy is a good idea and why.
Gotcha! - Empirelady

I agree wholeheartedly with you.
that couldn't be farther from the truth - sm

That's numinous hogwash. Neither liberals, nor the president, dislike the Constitution or its founding principles - a major one of which is that ALL men are created equal.

If you demand that believing in God MEANS Christianity, you are wrong. It is not for us to define which denomination is the holiest of the holy, or to use our faith as the battering ram that subjugates all others. This is NOT the country for those who seek to do so.
The framers of the Constitution were very clear on the subject of religion. - sm

The Constitution discusses religion in two places. The right to practice one's own religion and the prohibition of religious tests to hold office.

The word "God" appears in the Constitution zero times.

A lot of conservatives come off as anti any other religion that is not Christian. They seem to want to rewrite the Constitution to make it say that only Christians can run for office or that Christianity is the national religion, but the framers of the Constitution intentionally left this out.

Most liberals I know love the Constitution and certainly do not want to see it altered to favor one religion over another. Republicans keep pushing this narrative of a war on Christianity and a war on Christmas because it keeps their base upset and stirred up and fighting. There is no war on Christianity or Christmas. The idea that we could have a country where there was no King/Queen and no one telling the citizens what religion they were supposed to practice is why our ancestors left the United Kingdom, you know, to escape religious persecution. The framers carefully worded the Constitution exactly as they did in order to exclude religious preference. No religion will ever be the national religion ever.

Little known fact regarding a real war on Christmas: The Puritans in New England colony actually banned Christmas in the 1600s. They felt that the origins of Christmas were too firmly rooted in a pagan ritual called Saturnalia, basically a Roman feast and celebration with a circus atmosphere and gambling and gift giving that honored Saturn. The Christians of the original colonies outlawed Christmas. True fact.
Thus, my reaction to Pres. Obama is a Muslim - So WHAT if he were.

You don't have to be Christian to be president.

They think it the ultimate criticism that he is a Muslim, which, of course, he is not. Wow, enter -- racism.
^ That's because we think for ourselves and - dont blindly follow religous dogma.
