lottery winner/food stamps

Posted: Mar 7, 2012

This type of person just sucks the life out of this country.  She feels she's entitled to food stamps.  Poor thing!  After all, she has 2 houses and has bills to pay!  Shame on her.  I'd bet my next house payment that she voted for Obama.

Lottery winner using food stamps: ‘I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working’

While most people have played the “if I had a million dollars I would ____ ” thought game, few fill that blank in with “stay on public assistance.”

Amanda Clayton, a 24-year-old from Lincoln Park, Michigan, is one of the few who does, and she is getting away with it. Clayton won $1 million from the Michigan State Lottery this fall, but she is still collecting and using $200 a month in food assistance from the taxpayers with her Michigan Bridge Card.

“I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” the lottery winner who just purchased a new house and car told Local 4 in Detroit. The station even filmed her shamelessly purchasing goods.

When Local 4 asked if she felt she had a right to the money, Clayton responded, “I mean I kinda do.”

Clayton justified the sentiment by explaining that after taking her winnings in a lump sum and having to pay taxes, the total amount was just over half of the initial winnings.

“I feel that it’s okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “I have two houses.”

A bill to prevent this type of behavior, sponsored by state Republican Rep. Dale Zorn has passed the state House, as has a companion bill in the state Senate.

“Public assistance should be given to those who are in need of public assistance, not those who have found riches,” said Zorn, who has sponsored a bill requiring the state to cross-check the names of lottery winners of prizes over $1,000 with names of individuals on the dole.

Until Clayton is cut off, however, she says she intends to continue to use her benefits.

Guaranteed she worships at the altar of everything Obama. Another elitist, entitlement pig that is denying some truly poor person in need of food. Yeah, she's a real class act.

She looks to me like she's never voted or even cracked a book - sm - Uppity Voting Woman

I highly doubt she could even tell you what Democrats OR Republicans stand for.

Why no outrage for this kook from all those social justice defenders? Guess it's okay to have 2 houses, win a million dollars, and still be on the governtment take. All the while, someone that may truly need food stamps to survive doesn't get them because this lazy, greedy, inconsiderate pig scammed the system. Bet she voted for Obama, too. Yeah...Real social justice here. What, no lib outrage over the injustice of it all? Libs hypocrites still.

Wow. Half a mil 2 houses and a sense of entitlement? - Sounds like a republican to me.

If not now, soon...and you guys could use all the help you can get, so I'd go easy on her if I were you. Ironically, I bet you have no problem with the ubers and corps being on taxpayer dole for all eternity, huh?

This has nothing to do with Obama. Fact is, neither you nor Goldie have a clue how (or even IF) this woman voted in 2008.

In the years between the first orange stamp/blue stamp FSP (in effect from 1939 to 1943) and the pilot program (in effect from 1961 to 1964), BIPARTISAN efforts were made to develop, promote, authorize and implement the plan. Some of the main players were Senators George Aiken (R-VT), Robert La Folette (R-WI), Herbert Humphrey (D-MO), Estes Kefauver (D-TN) and William Symington, D-MO. PL 86-341 was authorized under Eisenhower in 1959 and implemented under JFK in 1961. Bob Dole (R-KS), who originally opposed it, changed his mind. During his Senate service he was an avid supporter of the FSP. Senator Jacob Javits (R-NY) helped promote its expansion during the 70s.

Aside from that, SNAP is administered at the state level, which means criteria for acceptance into the program, ongoing eligibility and termination vary widely from one state to the next. I don’t know the specifics of Michigan law, but I do know that in many states, including my own, a one-time lump-sum payment of funds to a SNAP recipient does not disqualify them from the program, regardless of the amount, as it does not change the original criteria used to authorize them, based on employment status, monthly income (or lack thereof), household composition, etc.

I remember a similar case happening a year or two ago when the lottery winner tried to withdraw from the program when he received his winnings, but there was no mechanism in place to withdraw the money in his SNAP account once it had been deposited…that is until his authorized term was exhausted. Had he not used them, they would have simply stayed in the account where nobody else could access them either. In Texas, single individual recipients have to reapply every 3 months and have a 3-year lifetime cap (whether consecutive of intermittent) on eligibility.

I suspect something similar applies in Michigan. The article clearly says this issue is being addressed in the state legislature, but I suppose that does not satisfy patrons of the politics of personal attack. No surprise there.

Call it a personal attack or whatever you want, but I will not go easy on her. She's a crook and I would tell it to her face if I saw her. She's taking money that she doesn't need. I don't understand how anyone could possibly defend her. It's perfectly legal, I know, but isn't there a MORAL issue here? She has no problems taking money from ME (a working stiff) and other Michigan taxpayers so she can pay for her 2 houses. I suspect there will be some changes coming down the pipeline soon, as nearly 100% of the people in this area are outraged.

I know very well how the system here works but thanks for the history lession anyway. Unfortunately, I have had personal experience with the Michigan Bridge Card a few years ago. I also had a horrible time trying to get off of it once I got a job.

But here are some facts for you too:
1. I never said I knew she voted for Obama.
2. I never mentioned "ubers and corps being on the taxpayer dole for eternity." I do, in fact, have a problem with that.

No matter what you're told, I don't hate poor people - I'm one of them!! Besides, she's got about $1 million more than me! Isn't she now part of the 1 percent group?

A crook? Really? - What law has she broken?

[ In Reply To ..]
That’s my point. This does not even rise to the level of abuse or fraud. This is a 24-year-old woman who before winning the lottery applied for SNAP and qualified under existing criteria. Her age and the content of the interview tells me she is not aware of the minutia of SNAP policies, just that her original situation which qualified her in the first place has not changed. After she received her winnings, she evidently STILL qualifies. That’s not her fault. The problem is with SNAP policy that lacks ANY guidelines on lump-sum pay-outs (which are not considered monthly income). One-time pay-outs of monies which do not currently disqualify a recipient are not confined to lottery proceeds. Inheritance, the sale of property, gifts, loans, etc all fall under this category. If you want to get worked up over something, direct your anger at the inadequate policies that enable this to happen in the first place.

You are assuming she does not need the money, which is probably the case, but you have no way of knowing how much debt she has, how long she has been unemployed, how many dependents she has, what the status of her or her family members health is, and so on….anymore than CryByLib has any way of knowing how she voted. For all you know, she, her parents, or her child could be undergoing treatment for cancer. All it takes is one catastrophic event (or its leftover bills) and that half-a-mil could go poof overnight. I am not defending this individual. More than likely none of the above applies…but my point is that there simply is no way of knowing her personal situation. What is knowable is that this woman did not write exiting SNAP policies, and it is those inadequate policies, which have been in effect for a long time, that have created a legal vacuum wherein these things can occur.

What I am taking issue with is the presumptions being made about a complete stranger for the sake of using all sorts of ugly, unsubstantiated stereotypes to advance a political narrative. I do not find that particularly more MORAL than her alleged “crime” of taking money the law says she is entitled to.

There will be no charges against her or others like her (again, ASSUMING that she is taking money she does not need) as long as SNAP policy remains unchanged. As luck would have it, this very issue IS being addressed in the MI legislature, has passed the House, and in light of this recent development, more than likely will sail through the Senate as well. If 100% of the people in your area are outraged, I suggest they take it to the steps of their capitol where this issue is being considered.

The history lesson has little to do with how the system works. It was offered as a way to point out that democrats and republicans worked side-by-side for decades to create these programs and that either neither or both sides own that history. I was addressing extraneous partisan attacks in this thread on Obama, who has nothing to do with this woman or existing SNAP policies in Michigan. Sorry to hear you had a problem with your bridge card. I am also sorry that it appears I posted the previous piece under your entry instead of the CryBabyLibs reply, where the poster DID tie this to Obama, and also used such language as kook, lazy, greedy, pig, scamming, and (naturally) the lib/hypocrite parting shot. Hence, I felt a similar reply was in order. Chalk it up to "slut" fatigue. I've had my fill of outrageous dialog this week. My bad.

My sincere apology to you for posting in the wrong place. Though I hardly ever agree with the content of your posts, I do appreciate their tone and feel like you are someone with whom I could have a reasonable, if not productive exchange. Sorry I got off on the wrong foot with that. Yep. Assuming the half-a-mil (after taxes, which more than adequately compensate for any “outrageous” benefits she may collect in the meantime) does not go into some big black hole of pre-existing debt, she is part of the 1% for the time being, but how long that will last is anybody’s guess, but nobody’s business.
thanks - goldie

It's available for viewing pretty much everywhere by now.

After watching it, I couldn't tell if I was more hacked off about 1 in 4 being on food stamps, the fact that she was buying junk food with her food stamps at a rip-off $$$ convenience store, or the whole lottery winner/2 house thing.

Anyway, girl was shaking in her boots when confronted on camera.

Yeah, I'm a progressive, but even I am appalled at the "hands out" mentality and sheer laziness of so many these days.

I don't know if she is playing dumb or she - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
actually is dumb, but she came off on TV like she was a few cards short of a full deck. Even lacking brains, though, she should still have a conscience and feel guilty using money other people need. And the sad thing is, she will probably go through her winnings in no time flat and be back on the dole in short order. Doesn't that happen to a lot of lottery winners?

Interesting. I thought the very same thing - sm - Uppity Voting Woman

regarding her blowing through all the money quickly, after having seen the video of her. Yes, you are right about many lottery winners. I remember reading about one who ended up in the same trailer park as before.

There is corruption - sweeping

the nation destroying the middle class. My suggestion is instead of focusing on one poor person who is scamming, how about we focus on the uber rich who are really affecting our lives by controlling legislation. One does not get as much of a sense of superiority with this approach, but better in the long run.
