Why do you believe special interests/lobbyists/corporations

Posted: Feb 7, 2016

Watching political talk show and the subject came up as to why millions/billions of dollars are contributed to politicians. Jake Tapper on CNN was interviewing Bernie Sanders where Bernie Sanders took the opportunity to say his contributions did not come from big business or corporations and he was not planning on taking money from them.  Jake Tapper commented those contributions were not given for the "fun of it" and insinuated votes were being bought by these contributions.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why certain politicians are given massive amounts of money by the people who have big bucks to fund their campaign and more?

Corruption runs deep in politics - That is why US is in a world of hurt

I think that is why Trump runs ahead in the polls. He is self-funded and owes no favors to special interests and that means his vote is not bought by contributors like the rest of the politicians with the exception of Bernie Sanders, who is giving establishment (funded by special interests) Clinton a hard time.

Their motives are exactly the same as ours. We all do - what we believe is in our best interest...

Whether it's voting, knocking on doors or making donations (whether large or small) - we're not exactly doing these things in order to elect someone who we don't think will benefit US in some way.

Right? Right. I understand that, and I'm fine with it. That's exactly how it's supposed to work. We try to determine what's in our best interest and act accordingly.

The thing is, I don't think anyone or any organization with a lot of money should have a "louder" voice than you or I, or the poorest citizen in the country.

What I would like to do is to limit donations by any entity (person or organization) to any candidate. I think $1000 would be a good maximum.

Oh, yeah - and "donation" would mean not only cash, but "in kind" contributions such as travel on a private jet, picking up a candidate's hotel bill, etc. Anything that has a monetary value would be a "donation".

Who is going to change the rules? - Corrupt politicians who get the big bucks?

You say "The thing is, I don't think anyone or any organization with a lot of money should have a "louder" voice than you or I, or the poorest citizen in the country."

Fact is the big money contributors do have the louder voice. The people with the money make the rules, which includes the corrupt politicians and the special interests who pay the corrupt politicians big bucks to make laws to favor/protect the special interests.

So politicians are not going to bite the hands that feed them and change the rules that will stop their cash coming in from special interests/lobbyists/millionaires and billionaires. That would not be in a politician's best interest who became a politician looking for power and the wealth that comes with power.

That is why you see Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump in the lead. Their votes cannot be bought by special interest big contributions to them or their campaign like the other candidates.

Tax Breaks For Special Interests In Compromised BillDec 12, 2010
So, now the dems have added more to the pot. Dozens of tax breaks designed to help a wide variety of interests - students, teachers, energy companies and lots of others - are due to expire at the end of the year, and most of them have been tacked on to the White House/Republican tax-cut deal to help it get through Congress The final package, released late Thursday, would extend tax credits for producing ethanol and for hiring American Indians. It would maintain deductions for teachers who ...

This is not necessary.  Everyone knows exactly how Netanyahu feels about Iran.  This is grandstanding, where they can.  This is detrimental to negotiations with Iran.  It seems someone need to remind the Republicans of the situation in the Mid-East and that we don't need one more declared enemy----unless, of course, full scale war is their plan. ...

Sanders Confronts Corporations For TaxJun 17, 2015
Sorry, no MTSOs. Today, a group of 80 CEOs are lecturing Congress about the need to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, while lowering tax rates for millionaires, billionaires, and the largest corporations in America. These are some of the same CEOs who head corporations that:  received a total taxpayer bailout of more than $2.5 trillion from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department and nearly caused the economy to collapse just four years ago;  outsourced hundreds of ...

Flash: What Corporations Do Or Do Not Pay In TaxesJan 10, 2016
Bernie Sanders is like a magician..."Watch this", while he palms the coin.  Now, just try this statement on for size: "XYZ Oil Corporation paid no taxes last year.  That's the reason I'm broke, working in a dead-end job, driving a junker, saddled with debt and hoping to hit the lottery." Bernie Sanders hopes you buy into that nonsense - and some will, because of course everything is the fault of someone else, but millions won't buy it, and that's why Sanders will ...

"Yes, companies have boosted profits—to near-record levels—by slashing costs." That's also what I have been seeing. The companies are making more money than ever before, taking advantage of those tax breaks, but they are pleasing stockholders by cutting costs (and people) in order to do it. That's very good business for them, but not so much for Americans who need to work. This is not a political comment, because it has been happening under both administrations.   ...
