There's plenty of outrage to go around as Romney

Posted: Jul 30, 2012

Let’s give credit where credit is due.  Mr Nowhere was finally able to pull off his chance to capitalize on his Olympics connection when he commemorated the Israeli athletes killed in Munich 40 years ago.  The only problem is that shining moment took place on Israeli soil, instead of the long anticipated realtime spotlight he sought to bask in during his stop-over in London.

The press-impoverished Tisha B’Av fundraising break-fast (LOL) was scheduled for the solemn fast holy day that marks the destruction of the Jerusalem temples and commemorates Holocaust victims.  Mitt decided not to heed advice given to him before the trip against the timing of the event, instead believing he could sneak in a low-key quasi-violation of the fast by not serving refreshments until a few brief moments after the 24-hour observance expired on Sunday.  He failed to realize he was expecting the host hotel and its employees to BREAK THE LAW against opening eating facilities on Tisha B’Av.  His cultural misstep appalled Israel's “little people,” who found his arrogant disregard for the centuries-old tradition immensely gauche, to put it mildly.  Laws and little people don’t count is the takeaway, especially when it involves 40 super-ubers and a million bucks.

In a related development, comments he made at the fundraiser select few reporters picked up on renewed "racist" charges previously explored in London.  This time the statement did not come from an anonymous source, but rather fell straight out of the horse's mouth.  His utterly oblivious lack of awareness of political and economic factors arising from 60 years of occupation (a subject for another thread) were also reflected when he said, "As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality.

Then the arrogance of ethnocentric bigotry reared it ugly head when he lifted a quote out of context from another author, who was applying the concept to something entirely unrelated to the occupied terrotories:  "...if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it's this: Culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference".  The repetitious emphasis reminds me of the "special x2" we found in his aide's one-sentence Anglo-Saxon boo-boo.

This drew a swift response from Palestine's chief executive committee (peace) negotiator Sa'eb Ekekat:  "This man, before he came here, he should have got some education about Israelis, Palestinians, and the region," Erekat said. "The Romney statements on Jerusalem and the racist statements about the Israeli culture being superior to the Palestinian culture reflect someone who needs to be educated, who needs knowledge. His statements are serving those extremist in the region now, and will serve extremists unfortunately."

In addition to Netanyahu’s mandated party opposition snub Romney dutifully obeyed, there was another meeting that actually took place that didn’t go over so well.   The fact that Mittwit failed to mention the peace process, the #1 cornerstone of US-Israel foreign policy for decades, was not lost on Israel’s occupied Palestinian population (also not mentioned), who were enraged at his plan to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem and his proclamation that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.  Mr. Erekat, quite naturally, found Romney's hubris “absolutely unacceptable” as well.

This red-meat pander also put Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority (who graciously decided NOT to cancel the scheduled meeting) in an extremely awkward position.  His meeting with Mr Bean has incensed Fayyad's previous supporters and, more than likely, will ultimately cost the Prime Minister his career in politics.  Oh, by the way, peaceful resolution of the occupation would not only diffuse Iran’s alleged motivation to attack Israel, it would also take the wind out of the sails of Al-Quaeda’s main recruitment tool.

Though this may not phase partisan conservative US voters much, the rest of the world, like Karl Rove after London, is left shaking their heads.

What a shame that the man who would seek the highest political office in the free world appears to deem it unnecessary - or even beside the point - to acquaint himself with world politics.

Perhaps even more embarassing is the fact that the political sound bites so happily consumed by so many Americans are so easily identified as empty calories by our allies abroad.

Good points, especially the blind consumption - vs empty calories thing

[ In Reply To ..]
Nowhere is this more true than the gluttony they indulge from the media's smorgasbord of all-you-can-eat, slop-'til-you drop fare that dominates coverage on Israel, a veritible bulemic's delight.

I particularly like the term...... - anon

Mittwit! lol! so fitting. I am not an "O" supporter by any means...but I do not like Mitt either. Isn't there another candidate in the wings that would have all of this political knowledge, grace, humility, not a "bulging bank account," and really truly CARE about what happens to the USA and the "people" who live in it?? Please find me a candidate like that. These two choices are just not suitable!

I hear you. There has got to be someone - AlphaBetty

more qualified for office than the two choices we are given. :-)

Though I have to "dislike" your assessment that the two - candidates are

equally unpalatable, I have to admit I'm jealous of your clever moniker choice. Good job.
LOL! Thanks. I will never vote for Romney - AlphaBetty

but I'm just lukewarm on Pres. Obama these days, mainly for failing to get Congress to stop their antics and get down to business for us taxpayers. He doesn't seem aggressive enough. I voted for Pres. Obama the first time around, though. :-)
I agree 100% with that. Though my enthusiasm - haw nosedived since 2008
[ In Reply To ..]
I'll be voting for him nonetheless, realizing had he not moved himself toward the center and given concessions to the right that, at times, defied logic, health care would have never passed and economic freefall would never have been reversed. It helps when I remind myself just how raw my anger still is over what he was handed and how we got there in the first place.

The term has been in the Urban Dictionary - for a while, but

is defined in terms of Romney supporters. We have the British press to thank for applying it directly to the candidate. I have a feeling they're just getting warmed up and will be coining a whole new vocabulary for both the GOP hopeful and his devoted fans in the upcoming months. Nice to hear you aren't among them.

Any plans for a write-in? Care to share who you'd pick? I'm particularly interested in any younger rising stars you think hold promise, since my alternate choice has been around for a more than a few years (just like me).

I'll go first. If Obama weren't running, I'd like to see Dennis Kucinich take the plunge again, even though he'd probably only have a snowball's chance to be nominated. I've attended his presidential campaign stumps in the past, even driving hundreds of miles to see him.

I think he fits your criteria on all scores, except he could perhaps improve just a tad in the humility department, though I will say he's not afraid to admit a mistake or explain in detail why he changed a previously expessed stance, the few times he's done so. He'd be the first one to point out that politics (like constitutional interpretations) is a dynamic process. His enthusiastic support for the establishment of a Department of Peace (a movement that dates back to the founding fathers) makes it easy (IMO) to overlook that minor humility flaw. Kucinich is a passionate firebrand type who NEVER leaves any doubt about where he stands. On the other hand, he's a realist who is not immune to compromise.

He has an amazing command of history, the law and case precedents, political science, economics, current events and legislative initiatives (from both sides), fellow politicians' views on issues, their voting records, and public and foreign policies. He gives the impression that he actually READS bills before he votes on them, and that he's one of those rare people that has a photographic memory. He answers unscripted questions from his audiences thoroughly and with great ease. I can't remember ever seeing him use notes during his speeches, at least not the ones I've seen him give in person.

peaceful resolution - off the map

[ In Reply To ..]
Iran has said they want Israel off the map. Obama abandoned Israel with the freedom agenda. I choose Mitt over Obama any day. Obama has his own agenda. Wake up people. This non-American birth certificate holder is ruining the US more than Mitt ever will. Iran will never want a peaceful resolution.

US press strikes again....sm - JTBB

A little know fact obviously is that in this supposed statement..."wiped off the map"..., Ahmadinejad was actually mis-translated by his own interpretors.

Exert --- The translation presented by the official Islamic Republic News Agency has been challenged by Arash Norouzi, who says the statement "wiped off the map" was never made and that Ahmadinejad did not refer to the nation or land mass of Israel, but to the "regime occupying Jerusalem". Norouzi translated the original Persian to English, with the result, "the Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."[15] Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, agrees that Ahmadinejad's statement should be translated as, "the Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad)."[16] According to Cole, "Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to 'wipe Israel off the map' because no such idiom exists in Persian." Instead, "he did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse."[17] The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) translated the phrase similarly, as "this regime" must be "eliminated from the pages of history."[18]

My guess would be that this will be discussed by the news as they analyze Romney's speech. Sit back and watch how many times the "wiped off the map" thing is repeated, and in particular who repeats it. LOL.
Did he also say he wanted - Palestine wiped off the map?

Since some Iran hardliners in the government do not support recognition of Israel, annihilating an area smaller than the state of New Jersey that contains occupied Palestinian territories populations seems rather counterintuitive in the grand scheme of things, huh? Middle East policy 101 (can you hear me, Mitt?): An anti-Zionist does not an anti-Semite make. A quick Google search reveals even Ahmadinejad is open to a two-state solution (see link). Wonder if Romney is evolved enough to Google?

Let me see if I can help you out. It's ISRAEL'S war hawk factions who are rattling the sabers, as usual. 32% of Israelis oppose any attack on Iran of any kind. 19% of them support a unilateral strike, while only slightly more than a third support a joint US-Israeli mission. 75% of Americans DO NOT SUPPORT an Israeli strike on Iran. What does that tell you? Have you not yet learned the folly in pre-emptive wars in the Middle East? Have you ever inspected Iraq's body counts? You do realize W has admitted there were no WMDs there, don't you?

I can't think of a faster way to reverse the progress that has been made since 9/11 in the War on Terror than a US-Israeli attack on Iran. This is a NO BRAINER.

obama abandoned israel - no obama

[ In Reply To ..]
Obama became the first American president to require that Israel accept its pre-1967 borders as a starting point to negotiations with the Palestinians.

This is a dramatic departure from U.S. policy, which recognized that agreed-to final borders would be the end product of negotiations between the parties, not a precondition to starting talks. In essence, what Obama has called for is unilateral concessions from Israel without a single concrete concession from the Palestinians.

What makes this even more dangerous is that a terrorist group dedicated to the destruction of Israel -- Hamas -- governs Palestinians in Gaza. On the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority is in the hands of a Hamas-Fatah coalition, with the two groups having agreed to put aside their differences in order to demand recognition of a Palestine state by the United Nations this fall. If that happens, there will be no such thing as what the president termed "a secure Israel."

Oh, THAT Freedom Agenda, the one Romney denounced? Did you - Netanyahu agreed to pre-1967 borders
[ In Reply To ..]

in August 2011, as a baseline for negotiations, just a few short months after Obama’s May 2011 foreign policy speech (see link 1)?  Did you also know W called for an end to the occupation and a return to the 1949 Armistice lines to create a “viable and contiguous” Palestinian state (see link #2 to video)?  He did so AFTER the Hamas party (your so-called “terrorists”) won 76 of the 132 seats in the 2006 municipal elections in Gaza, compared to 43 won by Fatah.  So what does that make W?  From where I sit, Obama called for no such “dramatic departure.”  That’s hype.

I am well aware of who governs in Gaza, what parties comprise the Palestinian Authority, and of the history of their differences.  To suggest that the coalition’s “putting aside their differences” somehow makes Israel LESS secure is also hype.  What makes Israel insecure is the ongoing occupation.  BTW, mutual recognition of each other’s right to exit is the only way out for Israel AND the Palestinians.  Waging war and Iran and prolonging this genocidal occupation….not so much.

Here.  See for yourself what both Bush an Obama were talking about.

2010 map.  Notice the wide “buffer zone” to the east under Israel’s control, encroachment of the wall and its dicey butchering effect “protecting” illegal settlements Israel had previously agreed not to build, and almost every road within the West Bank leads to check points and obstacles at every turn.

The map series below from link #3 says it all.  Use slide bars to view all 4 maps.
