Ted Cruz remark angers Nigerians.

Posted: Oct 24, 2013

The Nigerian ambassador to the United States on Thursday decried Sen. Ted Cruz’s joke earlier this week that “Nigerian email scammers” built the government’s health care exchange website, saying his comments are offensive and demanded an apology.

Ambassador Ade Adefuye told POLITICO that Nigerians are “disappointed and shocked” by Cruz’s comments.

“We deplore the statement, and we demand an apology, and we demand it be withdrawn,” Adefuye said.

Cruz (R-Texas) made the remarks Monday night in Houston at a “Welcome Home” event with tea party supporters. The following day, Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.) criticized the comments and said they appeal to a “backward” part of Cruz’s base that believes the president is from Africa.

Adefuye said he was surprised when Cruz did not deny the “offensive” remarks, adding that it’s inappropriate for a senator to disparage an entire country to score political points.

For the life of me, I do NOT understand why people are so upset by something that's true.

If those people are so offended and upset, then their govt needs to do something to stop or prosecute all those spammers working out of their country. We're insulted and offended by the garbage and scams they perpetuate, and what's done abut that??

That's not such a difficult concept to grasp, is it?

If I were Cruz, I'd say demand and be dam'd, because he only spoke the truth. People need to stop being such whiners and so delicate and sensitive over nothing.

Do you understand the concept of - generalization?

[ In Reply To ..]
and why GENERALIZATIONS of a whole country/people are offensive?

i mean the tea partiers certainly get their pants in a wad when they feel insulted by generalizations!!

Wow. Telling as it was, even Cruz was joking, SM. - nm

It'd probably more accurate if not enough to be "true" - to say "all KKK" at least sympathize

with the Tea Party, (it is a FAR, FAR smaller group, after all), although many KKK of course would not.

Since this peculiar notion is being brought up again and again, I'll go ahead and point out that no one HAS to belong to the KKK, the TP, or the Democratic Party. We all decide our behaviors and are responsible for them. No doubt by far most TPers wouldn't dream of joining the KKK, although the still remaining decent and balanced TPers are, IMO, entirely too careless about the sort of people and behaviors they are willing to be associated with.

We are known by the company we keep, after all, and the TP behaviors most associated with that label these days are not considered admirable, or even respectable, by a majority of people.

to heck with anyone who can't afford inflated private insurance premiums. If they wanted to take personal responsibility, they'd do without something else to pad the pocket of big insurance.

to heck with anyone who has a preexisting illness. Too bad for them. It's God's will that they have an illness through no fault of their own. Just let them deal.

to heck with the child with cancer who taps out the maximum allowed by private insurer. God wants another angel.

Do you have any idea of the millions of dollars - that Rush Limbaugh

What a ridiculous thing to say. People help other people of their own free will, NOT by having a federal government take it and redistribute it to buy votes.
Right before Obamacare, 45,000+ people died as a - direct result of lack of insurance. Now,
[ In Reply To ..]
many of those died of cancer that wasn't treated in time or adequately.

That's 45,000 a YEAR and doesn't include all those deaths to which lack of insurance, or inadequate insurance, was just a contributing factor (millions?).

I'd say people aren't doing a good job at all by helping others when the mood happens to strike them. They don't even take care of those in their own towns, for goodness sakes. BTW, NO points to "Rush," whose charity is so loudly touted even though it has never required him to sacrifice so much as a good cigar for others.

As a TPer, he's still probably trying to take her healthcare coverage away from her just weeks before it finally kicks in. She will need followup healthcare for life, including for any new cancers and/or recurrences? Has he committed to paying that too?

You can't answer for him, but you may know the answer to this: How do people justify fighting to return to the tragic days when life and death could depend on getting charity and each year more than 45,000 people weren't so lucky and died? Every year?

BTW, what is Cleaning Lady's position on healthcare reform?

Chances are he has avoided thinking this through to its logical conclusion. It's very highly unlikely that he will assume her healthcare, whatever it could cost until she qualifies for Medicare. Most charitable givers reach a point where they consider they've done their part, and now it's time for others.

That's not unreasonable. THAT does not take away from the goodness of what he did for her.

What an honest, thoughtful man would wonder about is the morality of blocking what other are also trying to do for her. Others like me. I am GLAD to pay into a central fund from which all others, even people I really wouldn't mind dropping dead, can get the healthcare they need.
If that were true, the TP wouldn't be focused on destruction. - The list of people and institutions

that requires elimination or drastic change, but usually elimination altogether, is so long the TPers never get to the end of their complaints so they can start talking about the far more difficult job of how to build after they've left America in disarray. They have NO idea what to do after the Fed is no more. Their thoughts haven't gotten that far.

Setting aside changing demographic issues entirely and the goals of its big funders, the big problem with today's version of what started so promisingly is that those who remain of the Tea Party have taken the conserve out of conservatism.

The special and necessary contribution of conservatives has always been that they protect what has worked for us in the past. They are the rudder that keeps our national ship stable and on course, CONSERVING, protecting, maintaining, and when necessary upgrading and repairing what has is working for us. True conservatives don't let it be carelessly abandoned -- or destroyed by malcontents.

Run the Tea Party image today -- an accurate reflection of its behavior -- past that. You imagine it as it might have been, not what it is.
