Maybe he really meant more robots will have jobs. Otherwise, most of the companies that use people for labor are taking their jobs to India and China, which by the way includes Trump and Ivanka.

I honestly don't blame Trump for our job losses, I blame automation, but I also didn't believe his lies that he was going to bring the jobs back like those on the right did.

One stroke of the pen and these corporations would be penalized 35%, which is what he promised. People believed him, voted for him. Was never going to happen. Over 60 pieces of legislation so far, and not a word on this. Congress is not in favor of this AT ALL, but they let him promise it so he would win. Sort of like showing his tax return after audit, sort of like the wall, sort of like that "fabulous health care plan" he had back in April 2016. They all knew none of it was true. He has also not started any NAFTA negotiations that he said he would do in the first 6 months. Not going to happen.

and it's coming and we need to be prepared. He was smart enough to know that we live in a changing world and did not try to take us back to the 50s like Trump wants to. He was striving to bring tech jobs, science jobs, not coal jobs.

I guess you can connect the dots on types of jobs that would be best for a young person to strive for, probably something in tech, maybe a robot repair person. There are lots of jobs related to technology and people in this country better be prepared and not wait around for that coal job.

They used to have training for people whose jobs ended due to automation, government-sponsored training! And also some income while you were learning, rather than unemployment benefit.

I think the culture of greed now in so many corporations means when they lay off people they just try to wash their hands of them, aiming to deny eligibility for the few govt retraining programs there are out there, even trying to get out of paying UE.

I would gladly leave this profession if I were offered training in a field with the possibility of a job, but I hesitate to waste money (let's face it, I have no money to waste) on courses which sound like they might be better but I have no idea if they would pan out.

Our profession is dying, but it seems like coder and scribe jobs are close behind or experiencing similar degradation of pay, benefits, scarcity of jobs, etc., so why bother doing that?

I don't know what the answer is, but it's an important problem since not only are jobs like ours dying out, but apparently the jobs in the new industries like solar are in need of trained workers.

I daresay this current cabinet wouldn't know a thing about it, since most of them have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth and have no knowledge of actual work!

Obama dug us out of the hole that was the Bush recession, kept the nation sane while the BP oil spill was polluting the Gulf, kept the nation sane through the big influenza scare, kept the nation sane with the ebola scare and managed to pass and maintain the Affordable Health Care Act (which by the way increased health care jobs), Hurricane Sandy, Sandy Hook, etc. All the while having Nincompoop Snowflake harping about birth certificates, McConnell's "one term president" and Tea Party's vulgar caricatures of the Obama's.

Watching talking head explain why above and beyond cheaper labor offshore, the taxes are cheaper and there are fewer restrictions offshore.

Yes automation plays a large part, including speech recognition software and less pay for editing than for transcribing a report.

And for those who endorse higher minimum wage, companies like Amazon will have robots do the work and drone delivery.

So should we work for $10 a week so the - companies will stay here?

I just went to a group interview where there were about 30 of us. We all waited in the lobby. There were about 25 men and 5 women. Three of the women were standing. I was on Craigslist today to look for my sister a kitty for christmas because hers just died and she hasn't been able to get another one.
