Sens: Snowe's healthcare vote puts her top Commerce perch at risk

Posted: Oct 14, 2009

Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine) is risking a shot at becoming the top Republican on an influential Senate committee by backing Democratic healthcare legislation, according to senators on the panel.

A Senate Democrat on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee said Republicans on the panel are threatening to vote against Snowe, who is in line for the senior GOP post that is about to come open.

Snowe is has a decent record of voting her mind which isn't always in line with republican platforms.

I don't want to see the current health bill pass, however. It's too mangled, too far from being effective.

NJ

Perhaps - but future legislation can remedy that - me

I think if they were to go back to square 1, they risk jettisoning the whole project.

I know you know NJ, that the Republicans are counting the days to January, when they can start the campaign for 2010 HOR elections.

If they are successful in changing the balance there, health care reform would be the first thing to bite the dust.

But if the plan fails badly... - NJ

What if "reform" that isn't really much reform becomes law then fails? That worries me.

And it should worry all of us! - Trigger Happy

These people who continue to say....pass reform now and work the details out later....are just ridiculous. If they are going to pass healthcare reform....which I feel we need....I want a plan with well-defined details with cost, etc. I don't want to push something through with no details and just a bunch of promises because we all know how great politicians are at keeping promises.

Snowe is a closet Democrat - who is she kidding! - nm

Or put another way, - me

Senator Snowe shows political courage and simple intelligence - she KNOWS we must move forward on HC reform and she also knows this is likely to be the best chance for that to happen.

Tweak the bill once it's out of committee - but thank God it can finally move closer to Nobel Peace Prize Winner President Obama's desk for his signature.

By all means..... - sm

"tweak the bill." You know what that means to me. Each person will want to add this or that to benefit their special interest groups and the next thing you know....we will have some crazy health reform that will cost us a heck of a lot more than anyone anticipated and it won't really help us out at all.

Another point to make is - :P

[ In Reply To ..]
that the democrats have the majority right now. Stop blaming republicans for ruining healthcare reform. Democrats don't need them to pass this. If the democrats can't get something passed when they have the majority in the WH and in congress....well....you can't blame republicans for that because you don't need them to get this thing passed.

Because the reality is that not having health insurance doesn’t mean that the Billys of the world die on the street. Instead, they die of poverty. We need to tell the stories of 1,000 Billys. Not the ones with famous, millionaire parents, but the ones we see in our clinics every day whose parents face the choice of keeping a low paying job or losing it to qualify for government assistance, or whose mortgages are three months late in the face of crippling bills. Without names and faces, affo ...

Vote On Healthcare Bill Is Being DelayedJun 27, 2017
Republicans could not get enough support from their own party.  McConnell knew they would lose the vote.  Wants to change the bill, get a new CBO assessment, and vote after July 4th.  CHANGE THE BILL?  This should be interesting.  After 8 long years, they still have no idea what is best for healthcare for Americans.  Repeal, replace is all we have heard and still nothing.  The tax reform, infrastructure, everything is currently riding on what happens with this ...

Olympia Snowe Confirms She'll Filibuster Health ReformDec 21, 2009
(More obstructism by Republicans just might lead to another vote in the middle of the night, IMHO. Obama's New Commerce SecretaryMay 25, 2013
Don't understand this Congress. They confirm her as Commerce Secretary but she had co-ownership of Superior Bank, a Chicago-area thrift which failed in 2001 after losing millions of dollars on risky mortgage loans to borrowers with bad credit. Pritzker told the Senate Commerce Committee she felt “very badly” about the failure of the thrift.       Don't you think It’s hypocritical for Obama to nominate Cabinet members who benefit from offshore tax ...

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...
