Schools dropping out - Kentucky students to Michelle -

Schools across the country are dropping out, not just these.  These are just the descriptive letter-writing ones.  LOL - No, I'm not providing a link for those.  I can only post one.

Kentucky--the epitome of health. - In top 10 of fattest states.

[ In Reply To ..]
No wonder they don't like the taste of health food. Lord knows their parents probably never introduced them to it.

I have some brilliant advice for Kentucky parents--don't like the healthy food your kids are getting at school? Try packing your children a lunch. You know, those little brown bags they put in their backpacks that have food in them? Stuff it full of Twinkies or whatever other poison you'd prefer them to have and shut up about healthy school lunches.

They are packing lunches. - nm

Far more parents than you'd realize are packing - rotten fruit and other inedibles. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to live in Glendale, California, a very well run, notably conservative, notably white, middle class community with good schools. People moved there for the schools in those days, and my own elementary school area had no ghettos, almost entirely middle class.

In a project to find out what foods kids were throwing away, our PTA (myself involved) started examining the trash cans after lunch and found a shocking, hard to believe amount of things like rotten bananas and other fruit, moldy bread, sandwiches of bread and a slice of something and nothing else. The "something" sometimes smelled questionable. And so on. This wasn't a majority of what we found by any means, but some could be found on each check. Also found, it won't surprise anyone, was a too-high proportion of unappetizing foods--cookies that had been allowed to go soggy or stale, limp browned lettuce, dried up carrot sticks, etc. Hungry children aren't exactly always throwing away good food, and they also often substitute offerings from other children for what they throw away.

I realize it's hard to believe that some "respectable" middle class parents, who keep their lawns mowed (front at least) and their cars polished, would do do this kind of thing. I no longer remember the numbers because I didn't compile the totals, but I sorted out the moldy fruit and bread, soggy cookies, etc., myself for the project, so I know it's happening. And I know if it was happening there in those generally satisfied days of good pay and low grocery prices it's happening everywhere in these bad ones.

"You know, those little brown bags they put in their backpacks that have food in them? Stuff it full of Twinkies or whatever other poison you'd prefer them to have and shut up about healthy school lunches."

That's the sterotyping, like people in KY are stupid and only eat junk food. That's stereotyping.
That is quite a stretch. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
That's not stereotyping. It's a direct response to people who are complaining about their kids being served healthy food.

That's why it started out with "Don't like the healthy food your kids are getting at school?" It's a response to the people that don't like the healthy food their kids are being served at the school.

How is that stereotyping?!
Can't understand? Let me try to explain another way - Truthhurts

"Stuff it full of Twinkies or whatever other poison you'd prefer them to have and shut up about healthy school lunches."

I had stated: That's the sterotyping, like people in KY are stupid and only eat junk food. That's stereotyping.

You are lumping every parent in KY into "packing lunches with Twinkies or whatever other poison...". I'm sure not every family in KY does that, but the whole state of KY was put into that stereotype by the poster's sentences.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary (and please note the example)::

Definition of STEREOTYPE
1 : to make a stereotype from
2 a : to repeat without variation : make hackneyed
b : to develop a mental stereotype about

— ste·reo·typ·er noun

Examples of STEREOTYPE
It's not fair to stereotype a whole group of people based on one person you don't like.

In the example, the poster is comparing a whole group of people in KY, which is stereotyping. Understand now?
you ought to take it up with the poster who said it - snark hurts, too

I mean, just sayin. It's quite possible that the poster you responded to didn't even read the post that contained that sentence. Golly.
I am the poster, and I was addressing the parents - who are complaining about
[ In Reply To ..]
healthy school lunches. I thought that was very clear. Sorry if you didn't get it, but now I just feel like you're twisting my meaning so you can change the subject to stereotyping rather than addressing the actual issue.

You can say I'm stereotyping, and I will repeat that I was not, but the fact remains that I still think those people should shut up about the school lunches and feed their own kids whatever crap they want.

"they do it all the time" is a stereotype - lol

Enough already with the if you don't post only O positive info we're going to reply like so.

The OP posted an article about an issue going on. Yes it's a negative issues. Not every post is going to be roses and morning glory's.

There are some very serious issues going on. This is one I had not heard about and I'm glad the OP posted. Feeding kids meals they are not going to eat is not a good thing. You can't force people to eat they way you want them to. Parents are the best judge of what their kids should eat. Not everyone in Kentucky is not healthy or fat.

The parents are correct. Kids cannot learn if they are hungry. They are not feeding them enough and the garbage they are feeding them tastes like vomit. They need to get the hint and find another alternative. There is nothing wrong with 2% milk. There is nothing wrong with a sandwich on something other than brown wheat bread (that's making me gag just thinking of it). Find an alternative healthy choice that tastes good that kids will eat. And for Pete's sake GIVE THEM ENOUGH TO EAT SO THEY ARE NOT STARVING! Then let them have recess to run it off.

Jeepers man, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Oh yeah, there are plenty of Kentucky children that are perfectly fit and healthy, so that other poster who wrote about it being one of the fattest states? Nice try. Every state has fit and un-fit people.

Sorry, NO SOUP FOR YOU.

That is so true. No government should tell kids what - they should eat. No. Just say no.

Enough with the drama queen antic of the faux "hatred for the current administration". Your accusation has no facts to back it up.

School kids say the food tastes like vomit. School kids do not have any "hatred for the current administration". They just want their lunches to taste decent and to be able to learn on a full stomach.

There is NOTHING wrong with that. Feed the kids something that is health AND TASTES GOOD then let them have recess and work it off.

The love fest with the current administration is taking away from any form of reasoning.

whole wheat bread does not taste like vomit. Neither do strawberries, peaches, apples, beans, or cole slaw.

If there are parents that can send their kids to school with Devil Dogs - fine - but there is no reason to use state or federal funds to purchase Devil Dogs. You would agree with that, wouldn't you?
Yes I agree with that - I have a side note too - get a grip
[ In Reply To ..]
Some whole wheat bread does taste like vomit. I've also had some pretty bad tasting fruit. All depends on how they are fixing it.

I didn't read anything about anyone using federal funds to purchase devil dogs (ho hos, ding dongs or whatever). However, with that said there are some delicious alternative chocolate cake/cookies that could be served. My sister makes some type of chocolate brownie thing that is scrumptious and low in fat.

Lunches need to be nutritious AND taste good AND kids need to eat enough so that they are full and can concentrate on their studies without thinking about how hungry they are because the food either tasted so bad they could not stomach it to eat it or they were given portions so small that it wouldn't feed a mouse. You would agree with that, wouldn't you?
I'm wondering - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
what vomit tastes like and how people use that flavor to describe what food tastes like.
Good point! - nm
[ In Reply To ..]

It's called a descriptive - get a grip
[ In Reply To ..]
It's like when you have a pain in your back and you say "it feels like someone stuck a knife in my back". Since you've never actually had a knife stuck in your back you don't know exactly what it feels like, but you have a pretty good idea it must feel like that.

Most likely what they mean is the food tastes like you know what and makes them want to vomit.

Kids will just be truthful. Still going to go with the feed them something nutritious that is tasty that they like and give them extra recess. It IS possible you know to have a nutritious meal that taste good. Evidently the "vomit" they are serving does not.

You also need to realize that every kids size is different. You can't feed a 100 pound kid the same amount of food that a 12 pound kid eats just because they may be in the same grade range. Any nutritionists knows that. Each child should be served an appropriate portion for their body weight. Again, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

I have an idea that I think is a win-win situation. Let a trained nutritionist put together healthy and tasty meals. Evidently Michelle has no experience/training doing this. She could still be an important role, maybe with the exercise part. She just doesn't understand nutrition needs for kids. Again you can't expect a 100 pound person to eat what a 12 pound person eats and expect they are going to be full or happy about it. Kids need to be not be hungry so they can concentrate on their school work and not be waiting to hide out in the bathroom to eat something because they are being starved (been there done that). By starving the kids and giving them food that tastes like you know what that they don't eat it WILL lead to obesity because what's going to happen is they are going to stuff themselves before they go to school, hide out in the bathroom with devil dogs or ding dongs (again been their, done that, except my choice was Suzie-Qs, the package didn't make as much noise opening it when hiding in the bathroom stall) and then they will stuff themselves when they get home.

There has to be a better way. Again, since Michelle does not understand nutritional needs for all kids she needs to pick another project to work on. Maybe the exercise/dancing part. She's a great dancer, she should put together some exercise/dance routines they could do.

You think "some" whole wheat bread tastes like vomit? And you think we should get a grip? The idea here is to provide wholesome foods to school kids - which is a heck of a lot cheaper and more nutritious than outsourcing the school cafeteria to empty-calorie food purveyors.

Kids worldwide eat nutritious foods at school, largely due to the fact that they actually have a culture that predates mercantilism.

Are you seriously suggesting these kids are so undernourished that it is affecting their ability to learn, yet they won't eat nutrient-rich food that is right in front of them?

That sounds like a major psychological issue. I think these kids would benefit from counseling.

That's because they've been raised on lard-dripping - fried chicken & butter

globbed biscuits and potatoes. Yuck.

Good wholesome and healthy foods probably would not please their fat-addicted palates.

Brocoli casserole
Cole slaw

Country ham
BBQ
Crepes
Chocolate pie
Pecan pie.

Those are just a few of the things they eat. In fact in all the menus I read not once did I see lard-dripping fried chicken or butter-gobbed biscuits and potatoes.

maybe you should do some research before making generalized statements about something you don't know about.

Besides my friend from Kentucky makes the best, crispy fried chicken (not greasy). She serves it with a huge salad and mashed potatoes, which are fluffy and light and for desert fruit salad.

What is Justified? - ?

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm just saying when a kid is raised on greasy, southern cooking, the palate might find healthy, whole foods nonappealing.

It's all about how the children are fed from birth. The first time my son was served a glass of whole milk (neither of us knew it wasn't skim), he just about gagged.

He packed his lunches because he couldn't tolerate the fatty crap they served at school.

Fried chicken is fried, full of fat, and unhealthy, no matter how "crispy" it is. If it's fried, it's greasy because by definition, it is saturated in grease for several minutes.

And I have no idea what Justified is. You appear to be the one well versed in whatever it is.

[ In Reply To ..]
You don't know what these kids eat. Looking at everything I read and talking with my friend not everyone is raised on greasy southern cooking. That would be like saying everyone in the south eats possum or coons.

Again, it all depends on how the food is fixed. Kids need to be fed nutritous food that tastes good. Evidently the ____ they were being given tastes like it. Beleive me, I've had some pretty nasty brown wheat bread that tastes like cardboard. There are other healthy choices out there. But if the food being served to them tastes like you know what then find another alternative. My sister and I were raised on 2% whole milk. The first time she had a glass of nonfat milk she just about gagged too. Growing up our school lunches were delicious and healthy. We had spaghetti, meatloaf, salads, chicken, sandwiches, and other nutritious and healthy items.

Since you have never had my friends fried chicken you cannot comment on it. I can. It is moist, crispy and not greasy. She's an excellent cook and she has learned to take a lot of "fat" out of her cooking. She actually makes fried chicken, but she does not leave the skin on it. Don't know how she does it, but her fried chicken is NOT greasy, nor is any of her other foods she makes. She and her whole family are very healthy and not overweight.

Justified is a TV show on FX. It takes place in Kentucky and it stereotypes people in KY as being bootlegging stupid backwoods into drugs, etc. You know stereotyping, just like what you did.

You don't know what people in KY eat. They don't all eat greasy fried chicken butter gobbed biscuits and gravy. you are assuming all the kids eat that stuff. They don't. You don't sit at their table. My friend said they never at all the stuff like that growing up. You also don't know how the schools are fixing the food either.

Since you said that your son couldn't tolerate the crap they served at school then it's pretty easy to understand that it's possible the schools are not making the so called "healthy" food taste like crap. And I'm telling you, some whole wheat breads taste like cardboard. There are better choices.
I'm not stereotyping. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Five out of the top ten most obese states are southern states, 7th is Kentucky.

I'm not stereotyping. When a child is raised on a certain way of eating (i.e., mushy white bread), healthy food (i.e., whole grain bread), just isn't going to be the same.

That doesn't mean it tastes bad or is prepared poorly. It is just possible the the child has never had the opportunity to eat food in its healthiest form and therefore doesn't like the taste.

Someone in this thread said that vomit was a descriptor, well my use of greasy fried chicken is a descriptor to represent how characteristically unhealthy southern cooking is.

And I meant tolerate as it made my son sick because he was not used to the high fat and sugar content the school lunches had back then (80s and 90s), not that it tasted like crap. But it could have, of course, I just meant made him feel bad.

Healthy eating has to start somewhere. If parents won't take the responsibility, I see no reason why it's a bad thing for schools to pull up the slack. Education should include nutritional learning. It has as much to do with a child's future as any other thing they teach in school.

regarding the issue raised, they said healthy food tastes like vomit.

My only conclusion is they are so used to eating greasy, unhealthy, processed food, that good, healthy, whole food is foreign, as vomit may be.

I was raised in the south on southern food. Eat everything on your plate or go to bed early. There are children starving in China.

I had to work hard at retraining my palate and my eating habits. I had to relearn my lifestyle. I vowed when I had kids they'd not face such a challenge. It's really amazing how many things are better for a physically and emotionally developing child when a healthy lifestyle is encouraged and practiced.

I can't help but wonder what all these angry - people look like.

of these parents provide a good breakfast for their children before they go to school. Many schools do also offer breakfast to students. It is not the responsibility of the public schools to feed your children. The meals provided at less than cost, often free, are a convenience and a safety net. Most schools here post their weekly menus in advance. If you don't like the offerings, pack a lunch. It is not a negative thing that our taxes are going toward providing healthy food to our children. It is very sad that the FLOTHUS has been the focus of derision because of her promotion of fitness and healthy eating in a country where most citizens are either overweight or obese. Very admirable I say.

But no, even if it was this does not make the republican party look petty or petulant. If anything it makes the democrat party look like a bunch of whiners they they cannot take criticism where criticism is due.

With all the other issues looming I think the democrat party has plenty to worry about if they want the country to vote for them. They are doing nothing to help their cause except whine that they are being picked on.

NRA Wants Armed Guards In SchoolsDec 21, 2012
Of all the ways in which we could respond, this, in my opinion, is the most stupid. It should be noted that "good guys with guns" are not impermeable to gunfire. Fighting fire with fire is not the way for our society to evolve. The CDC is barred - legally BARRED - from releasing data on gun deaths because the NRA is such a strong lobby. Until which time this data is made available, the NRA should keep both sides of their mouths shut. And shame on all the spineless legislators who bow to the ...

Colorado Students Protest Against ConservativeSep 26, 2014
Apparently the school board decided to institute a revisionist form of history books and the KIDS are protesting.  Seems the teachers are not too happy with this school board either.  "They waved signs declaring, “It’s world history, not white history,” and talked about Cesar Chavez and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leaders of the walkout urged others to stay out of the streets and not to curse, and sympathetic parents brought poster board, magic markers an ...
