Rand Paul's Kentucky Constituency

Posted: Apr 8, 2015

I always like to hear what constituents have to say about their senators or other public officials running for higher office. Are there any MTs from Kentucky out there who have any personal knowledge or stories they can share? Is Rand Paul well liked in your state?

To me, he really seems like a moderate, not too right and not too left. He may be what I'm looking for in a presidential candidate, but I'm open to hear more or follow more links. Many thanks.

If it's just snark or gotchas you want to post about, please don't. Let's have a rational discussion for once.

;

On some issues... - moderate independent

...he seems very reasonable, but on others, he's got some very extreme positions. And I don't like that he's been caught more than once copying stuff from Wikipedia (word for word) and using it in his speeches (see link). In all truth, I don't think he stands a chance in the general election.

Former Tea Party, but reasonable, responsive to constituents. Both right & left accuse him now - of backpeddling to get elected

If he'd be clearer about why he's changing his mind on some issues, the backpeddling accusations would go away. People on the right feel he's being disloyal to extremism to get elected, people on the left don't trust he's not still extremist.

On the plus side, if you write him, even if you're not in his constituency, he will write you back a very detailed, personal letter regarding his plans and ask for feedback. He has some great ideas about amendable bills/laws in Congress so that sweeping Obamacare-type bills can't happen again without amending them if problems arise, especially with immigration law looming as well. However, his bill to enact this was voted down recently.

On the negative side, he helped start the Tea Party extremism movement and you can still see remnants. Also, his name along with 46 Republican senators on the letter to Iran took his popularity down because it was seen as divisive and hypocritical to accuse the president of not adhering to the constitution with Iran, but did not adhere to the constitution themselves. Because they weren't a congressional majority or even a senate majority, but attempted to represent congress fully anyway, to a foreign country, bypassing full congressional vote entirely to do so. Also, nagging accusations from former female clinical staff at regional hospitals from when he was a practicing ophthalmologist persist about his negative view/treatment of women, they don't seem to want to go away years later. Doesn't mean it's true though, but I have heard that said about him a lot, publicly and privately, before he got into politics in fact.

PS - One more negative to many Kentuckians is he got his MD at Duke. Most Kentuckians aren't big fans of Duke since Christian Laettner, but that's a basketball rivalry thing I don't even count, but sadly true about Kentuckians lol. (Another Blue Devil on the other hand, Christian Laettner, still owes me big money in tips as a cocktail waitress while in college in 1992;)

Saw one of his first interviews - He is extremely rude

Paul Ryan On Ayn RandAug 16, 2012
I have been hearing that Paul Ryan worships Ayn Rand saying the following:   "I just want to speak to you a little bit about Ayn Rand and what she meant to me in my life and [in] the fight we're engaged here in Congress. I grew up on Ayn Rand, that's what I tell people."   "I grew up reading Ayn Rand and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value systems are, and what my beliefs are." I have to admit I did not know anything about Any Rand, so I ...

Rand Paul: SCOTUS Doesn't Get To Decide Jun 28, 2012
The exact quote is, “Just because a couple of people on the Supreme Court declare something to be 'constitutional' does not make it so."  OMG.  Is this the best the TP has to offer?  Is this the same Tea Party whose platform is founded on the principle that, "The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land and must be adhered to without exception at all levels of government?"  One has to wonder if he has ever read it.  Then he said, "The Tea P ...

McCain, Graham Blast Rand PaulMar 07, 2013
McCain quoted heavily from a Wall Street Journal editorial that slammed Paul’s filibuster on the Obama Administration’s drone use, including a line that said “If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in college dorms.” McCain called Paul’s concern that the government could kill any American with a drone “totally unfounded.”  Graham also chided his fellow Re ...

Rand Paul Is Wrong. What Trump Did Is Distinctly NOTApr 08, 2017
More than 125 times in our history, Presidents (including in recent times Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama and Trump) have taken military actions without the approval of Congress.  Obama is an interesting case in point.  He sought approval from Congress to launch attacks in Libya, failed to get it and then launched the attacks anyway, arguing that he had the Constitutional and legal authority to do so (which he did).  Two years later, after the chemical attacks in Syria, Obama's ...

William Hilton Paul, the 22-year-old son of Republican presidential contender Rand Paul, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol just before noon Sunday after he hit the back of a parked vehicle on Woodland Avenue. This is the third time William Paul has had a run-in with the law because of alcohol use. A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Heroin Epidemic In Ohio And KentuckyJun 19, 2017
Three young males died this year in their early 20s in separate incidents.  I know their families.  They came from good homes, had a lot of promise.  They each reportedly got started on pain medication and when prescriptions were not renewed went out on the street to get other drugs. Obama Healthcare Driving The Economy In Kentucky. May 28, 2017
The impact of dissolving the ACA will be far reaching everywhere, jobs lost.  I wish we could come together as Americans and just begin fixing the more glaring deficiencies in the program we already have.  I think a public option would be a good start.  This should have been in the original bill but politics and the insurance lobbyists got in the way.  Ultimately, single-payer like the rest of the civilized world is my preference. ...
