Paul Ryan - GOP budget proposal

Posted: Feb 12, 2010

Cut Medicare and privatize Social Security. That's what the republicans presented.

Let's hope we don't hear any more screaming about rationing health care under Obama, because that's what the republicans want, not the dems.

I am amazed that they are not just sticking to NO. Whenever they come up with a proposal, it hits the fan. Like this tired attempt to do Medicare and Social Security in.

The good news is that there are a fair number of older people who are republican. They may rale against big government but I don't think they will let their boys get away with cuts to the very services they are or soon will be using.

Paul Ryan and his Roadmap for America looks like another bridge to nowhere.

Cuts - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
Obama's cuts target waste and fraud, not the programs themselves. That's something people have complained about for years, waste and fraud. Why complain that Obama wants to fix it?

The republicans want to do away with the very programs themselves, programs they fought against since their inception.

Pick what side you're on: support social services (dem) or not (republican). That is a classic difference between the parties. You can't claim to be pro-medicare and pro-social security AND pro-republican/anti-Obama. That just wouldn't make sense. Oh, wait...

One Question I have is how can anyone under 65 - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
qualify for MediCare? I was always under the impression that you were only forced under that program when you turned 65.

As for cuts, pubs aren't the only ones spouting cuts. Dems do it, too. The current health care plan had something in it about paying for the plan by cutting MediCare by $500B, so we can't just lump pubs as the ones who want to do it.

Coverage under 65 - NJ

Disability, ESRD, and ALS could get you medicare if you are under 65.

Again, dems want to address fraud and waste in medicare, not cut it across the board or privatize it. Big difference.

NJ

If that's so, why haven't the Dems done it yet? They've been in charge since 2006.... - Anon

Veto and filibuster - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have to explain that the dems do not all walk in lockstep, right? Other than that, pre-Obama, Bush would have just vetoed it, post-Obama, the republicans have threatened a record-shattering number of filibusters. j

Why haven't we just rolled over the opposition anyway? I think our patience is wearing thin and we just might in the near future. I sincerely hope so.

NJ
Wrong, NJ., Republicans CANNOT filibuster. - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
The Dems HAD 60 votes (pre-Brown's election) and could vote for cloture anytime they wanted, which would automatically end any filibustering attempt. Nice try at blaming the Republicans, but it doesn't hold water.
Lockstep - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
You seem to think the dems walk in lockstep. They do not. There are conservative dems, moderate dems, and liberal dems. It is a diverse party. If they do not act as one body, one voting block, one piece of granite, it gets a threat of filibuster from the republicans, which has been the case for a record-setting number of times in 2009. You cannot deny that as it's now a part of history and was documented.

As a further note, Al Franken was not seated for the first half of 2009. The 60-vote majority wasn't in place for most of the year. That was more republican obstructionism at work.

Personally, I like not having the 60 vote majority now. Reconciliation, yay! The republicans used it to good advantage in the previous administration. It's our turn now ^^

NJ
So wouldn't that make the Democrats the Party of No? - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Typical liberal. Your idea of bipartisanship is "my way....or else." The GOP votes No, and they're "obstructionists." The Democrats vote No, and "they're voting their conscience" or "they're standing up for their constituents." Give.Me.A.Break.
Hardly. Review that one solid block of granite part - for your answer. Break not granted. nm
