Paul Ryan's Fairy-Tale Budget Plan..sm

Posted: Aug 15, 2012

How can you call this guy fiscally conservative when he voted FOR the auto bailout, two wars and the Bush tax cuts...none of which were paid for?  Exactly what part of that is conservative?

David Stockman (former budget director under Reagan) -- "Mr. Ryan’s plan is devoid of credible math or hard policy choices.”

Obama and Holder and the NBP, and you pick THIS to wory about?? (sm) - nm

No wonder this country is in such a mess.

Would you rather talk about Ayn Rand?..sm - JTBB

Yeah, that would be the athiest Russian whose works which seems to have molded your boy Ryan. LOL.

There's a reason I started a new thread. I didn't post this as an attempt to dispute the previous post. In fact, the previous post is so full of BS, that I decided to take the moderator's advise and just "move on."

I think her objectivist philosophies are widely misinterpreted.
I haven't read a lot of her stuff yet...sm - JTBB

but from what I gather, I would probably agree with some of her basic principles -- kind of like looking at man more as a species instead of something more. It gets down farther into raw instincts, etc...undoubtedly stemming from the atheistic viewpoint (which I share). However, actually applying some of her capitalistic views in the modern world where the intent is for humans to thrive together would be a disaster.....lol...now I need more of her material.
I think you'd like her... - ctmt

...she is a real humanist and values personal accomplishment. The problem is, the true capitalists in her novels are men and women of such high integrity and unswerving honesty that it would be hard to imagine her vision coming to fruition in today's society - where money and power are used to subjugate and control. Atlas Shrugged is a great read!

I think you have it wrong - MTMT

Ayn Rand came from Russia. She saw firsthand why socialism is bad. She actually promotes capitalism and the free market system as the way for everyone to prosper. Ryan has already said he doesn't agree with her objectivist philosophy. But her free market ideas make a lot of sense. I agree. Let people be creative and build businesses and get government out of the way. We all prosper. When government gets involved, nothing is done right and they spend way too much money; it isn't their money they are spending, so they don't care.
You really haven't read her stuff yet have you...sm - JTBB

Ayn Rand, while genius in her own right in my opinion, promotes capitalism simply because it goes along with individualism. If you actually read her stuff, you'll find she was never concerned about the quality of life for a community, country, etc...but rather just for the individual.

In response to..."we all prosper"...that idea didn't work so well for Reagan.
We need SOME government involvement in our lives. - (see message)

I like my freedom, love my country, and dislike paying more in taxes as much as the next person. Zero government involvement would be fabulous if human beings weren't, well, human!

Some humans are purely wonderful people; but especially when money is concerned, some people are absolutely inhuman to their fellow man. Left completely to their own devices, I don't trust all business entities to look out for anyone but themselves and their bottom lines. Don't you remember reading about the unconscionable treatment of workers, even in THIS great country of ours, before safety and fair treatment laws were enacted? I would never want to go back there--would you??

Greed is too powerful an emotion for some folks, and I just don't trust all companies to "do the right thing" if they aren't held to the law. I wish that wasn't true, but we all know it is.

Slightly off topic, but speaking of trusting businesses, if you believe that every business which features a Jesus fish symbol in their Yellow Pages ad or on their company vehicles guarantees that they are an honest, Christian, totally trustworthy company to hire, you are very naive. I'm a Christian, but I make a point to avoid places like this. I learned as a child that we're not supposed to make a show of our piety.
it's not all or nothing - MTMT

I never said we don't need government. That would be anarchy and a disaster. The government's job is to protect the people. But they have become way too intrusive in our lives. Some of the stuff that's happened is just absolutely ridiculous, like laws that say a kid can't have a lemonade stand. Or telling me how much pop I can drink. They've put in regulations to protect us from corporations, and that's fine. But they've gone too far to the point where it's sometimes impossible for someone to even start a business. The politicians have gotten so full of themselves, and I guess they have to justify their existence by making laws every day that we simply don't need.

If they would get out of our way... if government were smaller... our taxes would be lower. But instead they keep making it bigger and spending more and more of our money. It's just insane.
Oh, now I understand, and... - (see message)

....I agree with a lot of this. I agree that laws that say a kid can't have a lemonade stand or regulate how much pop some foolish consumer can drink are over-reaching. I agree that this kind of thing is absurd.

I thought you meant gov't should leave businesses completely alone...no regulations whatsoever.

I truly WISH we lived in a world where we could trust businesses completely, but I don't think we do. If I'm a consumer who gets swindled or hurt by someone who hangs up a shingle and has been allowed to do whatever they want without ANY governmental oversight, then I'm going to shout and holler about "Where is the oversight that would've prevented this kind of thing!!?" Things are always fine until we're the ones who are affected....at least that's what I've observed in life and human nature.

You obviously haven't listened to Ryan speak - about Ayn Rand.

It's really becoming quite tiresome how much absolute misinformation you post on this forum - and also that you seem to spend your whole day posting here and trying to dominate the conversation.

Ryan has SPECIFICALLY repudiated Rand's political philosophy.

Paul Ryan - GOP Budget ProposalFeb 12, 2010
Cut Medicare and privatize Social Security. That's what the republicans presented. Let's hope we don't hear any more screaming about rationing health care under Obama, because that's what the republicans want, not the dems. I am amazed that they are not just sticking to NO. Whenever they come up with a proposal, it hits the fan. Like this tired attempt to do Medicare and Social Security in.  The good news is that there are a fair number of older people who are republi ...

In other words, congressional Republicans are taking the government’s creditworthiness hostage when they threaten not to increase the debt ceiling.
