New Unemployment Numbers

Posted: May 5, 2011

(Reuters) - New U.S. claims for unemployment aid unexpectedly rose last week to touch their highest level in eight months, pushed up by factors ranging from spring break layoffs to the introduction of an emergency benefits program, a government report showed on Thursday.

KEY POINTS: * Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 43,000 to a seasonally adjusted 474,000, the highest since mid-August * Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims dropping to 410,000. * The prior week's figure was revised up to 431,000 from the previously reported 429,000. * The four-week moving average of unemployment claims, a better measure of underlying trends, increased 22,250 to 431,250, the highest since November.

I'm not surprised. Companies are just not hiring. - Sad to say

I wonder if we will ever get jobs in America again. It all sounded so good years ago when they talked about how we were short-sighted and impractical when we didn't want to give our jobs away. Those with the power won and we, the people, lost. Fair trade. That didn't work out well for us. Trickle-down theory. That one didn't work out for us either. Wish we could find the authors of those ideas and fire them. Where is Donald Trump when we need him?!

Private-sector employers added 179,000 jobs in April, - Nothing to get excited about

The oil prices were hyperinflated from speculation, which makes companies worry about hiring. I don't see a huge problem coming up. Just the usual Wall Street fleecing of our 401-ks.

Here is the historical data from the US Dept. of Labor Bureau of Statistics.    Funny how the last big (and highest) spike was under the Reaganomics regime. As you can see, it isn't as high yet as it was then.  I predict it will peak roughly where it did then and will start to go back down as it did then.  If it keeps rising and does not show signs of a drop, then I'll panic.  After all, most conservatives think Ronnie was wonderful don't they? &nbs ...

Is it possible that somebody receives SS benefits and at the same time also unemployment payments?  My neighbor tells me that he receives both. I think it is possible, but this man is 80 years old and lost his job 16 months ago and is since then collecting unemployment and social security benefits. My question is:  Is there an age limit for receiving unemployment benefits?  I doubt that this man, aged 80, is looking for a job!  He told me that he is so happy looking for ...

A Possible Unemployment Solution?Nov 04, 2010
A financial pundit, James Galbraith, suggested:  We have a large cohort of people who have been displaced by a major economic crisis,” he says. “It's utterly ridiculous to make them subsist on unemployment insurance, when in fact, there aren’t going to be jobs.  This is not a temporary condition for a great many people.” Galbraith claims lowering the retirement age would solve that problem. It's a win-win, he says, allowing those nearing retirement a ...

Why Did The Unemployment Rate Drop?Dec 02, 2011
I think the most encouraging part of this report is in the last paragraph. The U.S. added 120,000 jobs in November, but the unemployment rate posted a huge drop to 8.6% from 9% and a broader unemployment rate fell even more to 15.6% from 16.2%. Why? The number of jobs added comes from a survey of establishment payrolls. The unemployment rate comes from a separate survey of U.S. households. The household survey is much smaller than the establishment survey, and as a result it can swing around a ...

Compare U.S. Unemployment To These CountriesJul 10, 2010
Canada's economy continues to outshine other advanced countries as the unemployment rate unexpectedly dipped below 8 percent for the first time in a year and half. Statistics Canada said Friday the country added a higher-than-expected 93,000 jobs in June and said the unemployment rate dropped to 7.9 percent. Economists had expected a more modest 15,000 to 20,000 job increase and that the rate would remain at 8.1 percent. It's the second biggest gain ever recorded by the agency in ...
