Michelle Obama thinks being First Lady is 'hell'

Posted: Sep 16, 2010

  • New biography alleges rivalry between two women strained relations between the French and U.S. presidential couples

Michelle Obama thinks being America’s First Lady is ‘hell’, Carla Bruni reveals today in a wildly indiscreet book.

Miss Bruni divulges that Mrs Obama replied when asked about her position as the U.S. president’s wife: ‘Don’t ask! It’s hell. I can’t stand it!’

Details of the private conversation, which took place at the White House during an official visit by Nicolas Sarkozy last March, emerged in Carla And The Ambitious, a book written in collaboration with Miss Bruni.

However another book, an unauthorised biography about the French president's wife, offers an insight into an apparently testy relationship between the two women.

Time for a little chat: Another biography about Carla refers to an alleged rivalry with Michelle and says it has strained relations between the French and U.S. presidential couples

I guess she thought she would just waltz in and everyone would love her and fall all over her and she could be queen of the country because after all she's the first black first lady. She assumed that they would just party and have their date nights, spend money lavishly on themselves, and at taxpayers expense and do whatever they wanted to do and everyone would be okay with that and not say anything. If they thought all they were going to do was get rich off of this, sit in the white house and not have to do anything they should have never taken the job. Each president I watch their hair turns gray very very fast (Obama is no different - poor guy went gray very fast too), so I know the job of the president really wears on them. It's a tough job, but when your campaigning and applying for the job, you better dang well be ready to do it (wife included). This is no party and that's not what they are sent there for. They are supposed to be representing our country and the people of our country. She's not doing a very good job of it. Just because she is pretty, wears expensive clothes, and is the first black first lady doesn't mean squat. She wanted the job and she needs to deal with it. Say (cut down) Bush all you wanted, at least Laura Bush had the courtesy not to whine about her job. It's part of the package.

And hey...at least she has a job and over 20 assistants to help her. It's a heck of a lot more than what most American women have.

Being first lady is "hell"...oh you poor baby - Give me a break!

Unauthorized, unofficial biog, unnamed sources making - unbelievable claims to sell trash.

Focks News (Stewards of Snake Oil Extraordinaire) is whipping its exclusive story up into yet another boring feeding fenzy and the faithful flocks are feasting themselves into bulemic oblivion. So what else is new? The book is slated for release today and its promoters could not have found a better mouthpiece to promote their fool's gold mine. Don't hurt yourselves stampeding B&N in your haste to seize that daily hate fix. Those cravings must be absolutely unbearable but I understand the appetite for more, more, more is positively insatiable.

No fan of Michele Obama-but maybe she just needed to vent! - plain jane

I am not particularly a fan of Michele Obama. However, I think she probably does need to vent at times and thought a peer would be safe. I think it was VERY unprofessional for this to be revealed.
I find this AFP piece a bit more plausible. - sm

See paragraph 4 in linked article. As one 1st Lady to another, I can imagine Michelle Obama making a tongue-in-cheek comment in an informal setting when conversing with Mrs. Sarkosy that was taken out of context, blown way out of proportion and misinterpreted in the worst possible way. What I cannot imagine is Michelle Obama complaining about her role as 1st lady. As for the unprofessionalism in the reporting, I totally agree and believe that any and all denials are called for from all sides, whether the comment was ever made or not.

Fox News appears to be completely supportive of the first lady (see link below).

The story posted here came from the UK Daily Mail.

Really? Then what is this article all about? - sm

My response was based partly on the fact that the poster to whom I was repying seemed to be parroting the sentiments of Andrea Tantaros (M-E-O-W), who penned the article below. Silly me! What was I thinking?

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2010/09/17/andrea-tantaros-michelle-obama-carla-bruni-sarkozy-white-house-lady-hell-job/
No, you were not responding to a Fox article - you were responding to...
[ In Reply To ..]
A Daily Mail article from the UK. I know you just wanted a chance to jump on and trash Fox news, but you really should check the sources before trashing one.

Fox is supportive of Michelle. The Daily Mail is just reporting what she said.
Unlike you, I did check the sources (plural). - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
As a matter of fact, when the post appeared, I was watching a Fox news report about the same subject. I read the UK article first, then Googled the subject and lo and behold, the first article to pop up was the Fox piece. I read it and it sounded almost identical to the post, so I responded in kind.

I find it a bit presumptuous of you to try to tell me what I was responding to. It is also telling that you have made no comment on the Andrea Tantaros source article I linked to in the post to which you are now replying. I am trying to give the original poster the benefit of the doubt. Being cited as a Focks flock member is probably WAY preferrable to any reference or association to soft plagarism, dontcha think? Besides, the propanganda-driven, mantra-chanting mindset of their viewers is legendary, so spare me the lecture. She sounded just like Tantaros to me...so sue me for saying so.

Question. If Fox is so supportive, how do you explain Miss Meow's cat-calls, err, I mean article?

Right-wing media attack Michelle Obama for fighting childhood obesity. Includes a 5:24 minute Hannity panel clip ripping the Obamas to shreds and Glenn Beck conflating and waxing poetic about how the first ladys healthy food choices will lead to riots, unjust imprisonment and global government. There is a charming passage where Limbaugh paranoia places him at the center of the universe as he expresses fears of being targeted by administration spys trying to place the blame for national obesity at his feet. Stossel's 2-cents equate Michelle Obamas obesity comments to the government ultimately deciding who we marry. Malkin sees this as a national security issue.
http://mediamatters.org/research/201009170003

Fox News: Michelle Obama is "Obama's Baby Mama", an enthralling little clip featuring Malkin foaming at the mouth while blazing banners slam Michelle Obamas relationship to her husband, calling her Obamas bitter half. During the short clip, another banner managed to remind us of the Obamas race with the infamous Obama baby mama slam. Later they used their faux apology to start another wild fire in their grass roots movement promos by introducing the terrorist fist jab between the Obamas into the national dialogue.

Fox News Cavuto Interrupts Michelle Obama's Speech to Call Barack a 'Nobody'. Headline pretty much says it all, but I would like to add that the speech Michelle Obama was giving at the time was on 9/11 in remembrance of Flight 93.

Then there was the recent wall-to-wall frenzied vacation slamming.

My coffee cup is empty and that is all the time I have for presenting a few of the literally hundreds of examples of what Fox support of Michelle Obama looks like. Miles and miles and miles and miles of video tape available for the doubters among us.

...then perhaps the first lady wasn't misquoted at all!

Miss Bruni divulges that Mrs Obama replied when asked about her position as the U.S. president’s wife: ‘Don’t ask! It’s hell. I can’t stand it!’

And who could blame her?
Good point. Well, I think "it's hell" having Obama AND - his wife in the WH. nm

and like I said, there are miles and miles and miles and miles of it archived on Fox's very own website. It suffices to prove my point. Fox is NOT supportive of Michelle Obama and to even suggest such a thing is utterly absurd.

Let's stick with Fox news coverage of this particular story, okay?

If you google "fox news michelle obama carla bruni", you will find a total of 3 Fox News articles about the alleged quote.

These include the Andrea Tantaros' editorial and the one that was considered supportive of the first lady, both of which were linked in this thread.

There is one more (linked below) that questions the validity of the author's sources for the quote.

I'd call that balanced reporting.

And if you google fox news michelle obama you get - 100s of examples of utter contempt for her.
[ In Reply To ..]
So how DO you explain the Tantaros article and square it with this bogus claim? Balanced reporting? Mama Grizzley has instructed her proteges to channel all extreme tpot messages through Fox and is giving them lessons on how to avoid taking personal responsibility for their own views. Dont be ridiculous.
I don't have to "explain the Tantaros article". - JMO
[ In Reply To ..]
The Tantaros article is an editorial, her opinion only. I am not sure what you mean by the statement that she is "giving them lessons on how to avoid taking personal responsibility for their own views", but you seem to be suggesting that people who follow Fox news are incapable of separating fact from editorial commentary. I follow Fox news, but I do not agree with Tantaros' opinion on this subject. The Fox news stories, however, were balanced and, if anything, leaning in MO's favor. You don't see that? Again, I am asking you to stick with this subject only. What was there in the 2 Fox news articles that painted MO in a bad light?

So, as long as we ignore Tantaros, do not look at Fox history - and refrain from comparing

their coverage to that of other sources, we can pronouce them fair an balanced? I think I get it now. Sorry, I do not play by those rules.

Don't ignore Tantaros. Read her EDITORIAL and decide if you agree with her or not. We did. You don't agree with her and neither do I. Common ground.

What was there in the 2 Fox news articles that painted MO in a bad light?

Play by whatever rules you like, but there was nothing said that painted her in a bad light, period.
Try following the entire thread, will ya? - sm

When you start off a post with "right-wing media", then the rest of your post goes on a rant about poor Michelle and Obama everyone is picking on them...

Then you start in with people you don't like saying they are "foaming at the mouth", and "paranoia" and "wall-to-wall frenzy" and of course that liberal buzz word "faux" it's obvious where you stand.

Your post was a total rant that had no credibility. If you can come back and discuss things as an adult then maybe one would be able to have an adult conversation, but all I see is a liberal rant that has no meaning or truth.

The "nice try but no cigar" is on your part.
She did not start off the post that way. The title of the article - to which she linked
[ In Reply To ..]
started out that way. You would know that if you had followed the link and read the article before posting YOUR rant. There were plenty of examples supplied for you to inspect that would explain why she holds the opinion she has and why her observations make perfect sense.

She stands where she stands and Fox's own words on their own videos are what speak for themselves. BTW, according to YOUR own words, you did not even bother to read the post or look at the links, so your credibility is built around exactly what? Prejudice, bias and refusal to even consider clear evidence. Uh-huh. RRRIIIGGGHHHTTT.
Her post.... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Was exactly what I wrote in my reply. She started in with "right-wing", then went on to say people on Fox were "foaming at the mouth", said "wall-to-wall frenzy" and "paranoia". All those little catchy liberal buzz words. I was not replying about what was in the links. If I was I would have said something in my post. The content of my post was that when someone goes off in a rant about Fox news...oh excuse me...."faux news" haw, haw, haw... and uses all the liberal buzz words then no, the post is not credible. Come on and have a decent conversation and act like an adult and you get a better response.

Um...yeah...I know exactly where she stands. Next time I write about an article directly then we'll talk about my credibility. Since I didn't post an article or any links my credibility is not at play.
