Independent: Why Romney closed the deal with me

Posted: Oct 23, 2012

1.  There was only one "presidential" personality on the stage last night.

2.  I became convinced that Romney is the one who can work across the aisle and get things done.

3.  Obama continued to refuse to own up to any of his obvious economic and foreign policy blunders.  Instead he was arrogant and snarky.

4.  The keys to an effective foreign policy are exactly what Romney identified:  a strong economy and a strong military.

5.  All that Obama could offer last night was four more of the last four, and we simply cannot agree with that.

6.  Obama lied about Iran last night.  He said that we would not allow them to continue to engage in meaningless negotiations.  However, that is precisely what he has already done.  He said "the clock is ticking" (on Iran).  Mr. Obama, the clock is ticking, the alarm has been ringing for the last hour, and you're still fast asleep.

7.  Romney will see that Obamacare is repealed.

8.  Romney understands what it takes to get businesses growing.  Obama has no clue, and no plan.

Your conclusions make a lot of sense. Thanks!

I originally thought I could accept Romney as a mod Pub president. Now I believe - he is running to serve the Mormon church

[ In Reply To ..]
with an extremely conservative social and religious agenda.

Not only that, between his own actions and my extensive readings of what other Mormons have explained about him and their church, my image of him as a rather dorky businessman with good intentions has been destroyed. I now see a profoundly arrogant man who will serve his church first, second, and third, with both indifference and contempt for the wishes of those American people who would disagree with him.

This man is not only a bishop in his church, many Mormons believe he has received the "second anointing" to become a king/priest in the Church of Latter Day Saints (a blessing available to very few), and thus Romney would believe he has been already accepted into the kingdom of heaven (Mormons normally have to "pass" first, just like other Christians). He also reportedly believes he will be a god in his next life; and he has himself said that he has committed himself and all he has to promoting the church in this one. Nutty? Not if it's your religion.

As for the presidency, almost everyone has religion of some sort. Making it your specific agenda--NOT the people or the country--as president is different. Whether he could accomplish his main agenda is very questionable; however, this is an extremely pious man who believes it will be his job, if elected, to turn our government into what the Latter Day Saints call a "theodemocracy" as part of the Second Coming.

Of course, he is counting on assistance from above in this holy coup d'etat (and from here once we all see the light) that he's not likely to receive, but even in a four-year term Mr. "If you're going to have women working" can cause a great deal of trouble just by instituting all he can of his religious cultural agenda. Two, and perhaps as many as four, Supreme Court Justices may be appointed by the next president. Only two are needed, though, even one possibly, to make enormous changes that would take generations to reverse. Remember all the extreme conservatives in Congress these days. Congress'd never come together unseat a justice.

Since this board is mostly female, note that the evaluation of Gloria Steinem, now as always working for equality, is that Mitt Romney is "the most undemocratic, anti-equality, authoritarian, extremist candidate I have ever seen, and there is the most distance between what he says and what he does." The danger such an extremist poses is danger to all of us, of course.

Better that than serving the "G-dd-m America" church. - nm

You haven't heard of Obama's spiritual leader - Reverend Wright??!!

Try Googling "God Damn America" AND "Reverend Wright". I hope that for purposes of this IMPORTANT discussion, the board police will NOT censor my post.

For more than 20 years, Obama was a member of this congregation and is attested to have ATTENDED and SUPPORTED the services conducted by this ANTI-AMERICAN, RACIST POS. If you have trouble with "POS", look it up.

Romney's religious background scares you. Yet Obama's background doesn't. You all are in the WRONG country. Leave and take Obama with you.

That is only your opinion that he is a religious extremist - JC
[ In Reply To ..]
Just because someone is pro-life doesn't make them extremist. I am not religious and I am pro-life. I used to think that unwanted children would only have horrible lives and be a burden to the taxpayers, but I have changed my mind. There are so many people out there looking to adopt children. We need to streamline and lower the costs of adoption. We looked into adoption but it costs over $10,000.

Also, Massachussets doesn't have a tendency to elect religious extremists since it is a fairly liberal state.

After conquering Massachussetts, now he wants to conquer the USA.

You have problem with an anti-USA, marxist black separatist church member being president, but a mormon - horrors!

No, and it shouldn't be the reason to vote for Obama but, of course, a lot of voters today don't remember (and don't know about)the Kennedy campaign.

BTW, as a female, I absolutely can't stand Gloria. Didn't like her back then, don't like her now. She is an extremist.

the way Romney did, and they would never have considered him.

I'd love to know what all the other candidates in the 2008 and 2012 Republican primaries knew about him to make them all dislike him so much. The one thing they all had in common. All the stories of the talk about him behind his back reminded me of high school.

I thought he stayed pretty cool. He didn't have that - backwards typist

angry look on his face like Obama did. He didn't try to interrupt as much as Obama did.

Obama said sequestation will not happen.
Plouffe said it MIGHT NOT happen, not that it won't happen.

Obama also took a lot of Romney's statements out of context; i.e., he just followed the democratic way of spouting only part of a statement, the part that would make Romney look incompetent.

Frank Luntz had a group that were Obama-dominated. They all voted for Obama in 2008. They felt Romney is better where economics are concerned but Obama was better in foreign policy and they ALL thought we need a strong economy to be strong in the world. They are seriously considering voting for Romney this time around.

I don't think he can repeal Obamacare unless he has a majority in the House and Senate. Don't know if he will have that, but I am donating money now to the smaller races, because that's what we need as well.
