If the majority of Crimean people voted to join Russia,

why is Obama imposing sanctions against Russia? I don't get this. If someone does, please tell me what I'm missing.

because the vote is recognized as illegal - sm

Why is it always about Obama? This is not about Obama. This involves the entire EU and has to do with international relations, international law, and international politics.

(Reuters) - The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions including asset freezes and travel bans on a small group of officials from Russia and Ukraine after Crimea applied to join Russia on Monday following a weekend referendum.

Crimea's leaders declared a Soviet-style 97-percent result in favor of seceding from Ukraine in a vote condemned as illegal by Kiev and the West.

The Crimean parliament formally proposed that Russia "admit the Republic of Crimea as a new subject with the status of a republic". Russian President Vladimir Putin will address a special joint session of the Russian parliament on the issue on Tuesday, aides said.

The move would dismember Ukraine against its will, escalating the most serious East-West crisis since the end of the Cold War.

I wasn't placing any blame on Obama by asking this question. However, since you asked, "Why is it always about Obama?"

Well, he makes it about himself. It is never "we" did this or "we" did that. It is always I, I, I or me, me, me.

But again, I was not placing any blame on him for asking the question.

The U.S. and the E.U. sound like "we" to me - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't hear him as making it about himself. My observation was that your post made it about him. After all, the question was: why is Obama doing this? Not: why are we doing this?
WE - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Today he did say "we," but that appears to be an aberration as it is usually all about him.
thus, my question above - sm

Which was: Why is it always about Obama? I do not share your impression.
This is what I'm trying to say.

That's what I would like to know too. The elections - were fair and legal

[ In Reply To ..]
The people of the country voted. They had a record turn out. There was nothing illegal or unfair about this. Just because some of them decided to not vote doesn't mean it was illegal or unfair. Just like here. There are people who don't vote.

There are no reasons for any sanctions.

Pretty sure you need to get up to speed on - what is happening.

[ In Reply To ..]
To name a few:
Invasion of a sovereign country is against the law. Crimea was a sovereign country invaded by Russia.

Vote was NOT legal and was unfair wt some voters being monitored by armed Russian guards. AGAINST THE LAW ON SO MANY LEVELS.

There are several reasons for sanctions.

Nice fairy tale - Try again

People who live in the country, voted in their own country in a free and legal election. They were free to do that, they did not have guns held to their heads. 95% of the country wanted to be part of Russia. Luckily for them their vote counts.

The elections were fair AND legal.

I look at it like this.. say Mexico sends troops over to Texas and says, lets have an election and see if Texas wants to be part of Mexico... and the Mexican soldiers stand around armed with machine guns etc and watch us all file into vote... and low and behold somehow the vote shows that the people in Texas want to join Mexico.. would that be okay with the rest of the United States???

LOL! It would be OK by me! (PS: They can - have Florida, too!)

...that Russia had guns to their heads either figuratively or literally.

Then you obviously did very little research - Russia known for its propaganda

[ In Reply To ..]
Which has been widely reported. It has also been widely reported that there were armed guards monitoring the vote...Yeha, no pressure there.

Course, if you only stick to the liberal channels that are commie sympathizers, you would not know how crooked these elections actually were.

When was the last time you placed your vote with armed soldiers "watching" over our "vote"?
So is MSNBC - known for its propaganda that is - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
nm

The problem with that analogy is that is not what happened - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
First, nobody held machine guns watching them file into vote.

Second, it wasn't another country that went into another country, it was the citizens of their own country where free elections were held.

A better analogy is like this....The US has an election. Everyone in the US is free to go vote or not vote. Nobody is forcing them. They have a choice. People go and vote and viola...the people of the country vote in free and fair elections. Evidently they did not want to be part of EU, they wanted to be part of Russia 95% of them wanted that. I don't believe you are now saying that 95% of the country's votes don't count, are you?

You are SOOOOOO far off - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
regarding this situation..

It MOST CERTAINLY WAS ANOTHER COUNTRY (RUSSIAN) THAT INVADED A SOVEREIGN COUNTYR (CRIMEA, PART OF UKRAINE).

Crimea (part of Ukraine) was NOT PART OF PART RUSSIA.

You have the worst analogy because it is completely false.

Crimea is part of Ukraine (a sovereign cuntry SEPARATE FOR RUSSIA) with their own independent leadership and government.

RUSSIA INVADED A SOVEREIGN COUNTRY ON FALSE PRETENSES, much like Hitler did.

RUSSIA ANNEXED CRIMEA FROMS IT SOVEREIGN COUNTRY (UKRAINE).

Try cracking a history book, a geography book, and get your facts straight.

Otherwise, your posts carry no credibility or true assessment of what is taking place.

Vote was not conducted legally and so voila, the end result was not credible.

Evidently, there are far too many on this board that are so lacking in history and geography, their posts are far past ridiculous and senseless.
I partly believe what you wrote and partly don't believe what you wrote - person you responded to
[ In Reply To ..]
Some of what you say may be true. Other parts I don't believe. I will do some research into it (from outside sources) to see what I find out.

Your messages would have been better received had you not been so snotty and rude in it. Sometimes it's better to try and make a point with just facts and not rudeness. If I'm wrong about something I will say I'm wrong, but if all you are going to do is be rude and insult me I will never admit it if I am wrong (I'm kinda stubborn like that).

However, my analogy was right on because the person I responded to was incorrect. They did not have guns held to their heads. The people who lived in the country was able to vote in an election held in their own country.

And if you think that was illegal then so was the ones here where you had black panthers standing outside the voting polls with their weapons.

I will be more willing to talk about issues, and discuss them in an adult fashion with posters, but not if you are going to be rude and call me an idiot without using the word idiot.

What The Majority Of The People Want Re Tax CutsDec 03, 2010
"here’s what the public said about the Bush tax cuts, according to the exit polls last month: 40 percent said to continue ALL of the cuts, 36 percent said to continue them for families who earn less than $250,000 a year, and an additional 15 percent said to expire them for all. So a majority -- 51 percent -- backed either the Democratic position or wants all the cuts to expire." ...

Froma Harrop: Public Workers Must Join New RealityMar 10, 2011
This was a very good article in Tuesday's paper. Too bad the showdown with public employee unions has come to this. One can be pro-union and still feel a growing resentment at these workers. They aren't to blame. They got what they could, though they overplayed their hand by resisting honest efforts to reform government and schools. Public employees are fighting to keep their old-fashioned defined-benefit plans. Such plans promise to pay a set amount to each qualified retiree. If t ...
