If gay marriage is legalized and Christian churches

if they fail to perform marriages, does this include Muslim mosques too or just the Christians?;

I sure hope they don't give exemptions to one - but not the other, but I

Churches should not be tax-exempt - sm

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2012/12/gay_marriage_churches_synagogues_and_mosques_won_t_be_forced_to_conduct.html

In theory, the government could direct the behavior of churches by mandating that they perform gay unions or punishing those who don’t by denying them benefits—in particular, tax-exempt status. After all, religious institutions rely on not paying taxes, so this is important to them. But the government has never used either power to tell religious groups who they have to marry. “After the Supreme Court struck down state bans on interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia in 1967, there was never the suggestion that private religious groups that wouldn’t perform interracial marriages would be shut down,” Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow points out. “Or lose their tax-exempt status.”

It’s just wrong to spook voters about gay rights by arguing that gay people are coming for their churches. It’s not gonna happen. Not just as a tactical matter, but also as a legal one. If that ever changes, it will be because we’re as united about the pernicious nature of anti-gay discrimination as we are about racial discrimination. Or until no one wants to belong to a church that doesn’t perform same-sex weddings, any more than they’d want to be in a church that forbids interracial ceremonies. Maybe we should be there. But I don’t need to tell you we’re not.

As to whether this would apply to mosques, temples, and anyone else who is tax exempt due to religious organization.

I remember when Roe vs Wade was being decided. They - told us it would get rid of

[ In Reply To ..]
child abuse, crime, you name it. This will probably open a can of worms, if you can redefine marriage, why stop at same sex, why not legalize polygamy.

I don’t understand how it can be legally justified or successful. Churches have never been obligated to marry anyone.

Boy oh boy, some of you are REALLY confused...sm - VTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Who the check is telling you that religious institution of any kind will lose their tax-exempt status if the SCOTUS rules in favor of same-sex marriage? This is absolutely not true! No one will be forced to perform marriages! However, if religious institutions involve themselves in government, they could, and should, be in danger of losing their tax status.

Confusion?? Look in the mirror. No fact with post - Just opinion; so means nothing.

It wasn't until the 1900's that states got involved - and started requiring

[ In Reply To ..]
a license to marry in an effort to stop blacks from marrying whites. You'll probably see many states change and give it back to the churches, which is where it belongs anyway.

marriage is a civil matter - sm

Whether we legalize gay marriage or not, no one can force any house of religion to perform a marriage to which they object.

Who said anything about churches having to perform weddings, or losing their tax-exempt status for not doing so?

I don't understand what's to dislike about this post - sm

The government cannot force any religion, churches, or other house of worship to perform a marriage of any kind.

The issue of gay marriage is independent of religion.

In the case of Bob Jones University, the Court held that a college was not entitled to tax exempt status if it opposed interracial marriage or interracial dating. This isn't about forcing any religion to perform weddings or lose tax-exempt status.

[ In Reply To ..]
Except is it wrong that my first thought on that joke was Ann Coulter? lol

Sad there's more than one. I gotta say too, regardless of her politics and though another network, Nancy Grace's tabloid journalism style, much like Pirro's, gets on my last nerve and I'm not sure why. I guess I just don't care for people trying cases in the press publicly without having all the information. I mean, in certain cases like Freddie Gray, the public should know and facts you can't avoid like, okay, SOMETHING happened for that man to die in custody and since we pay them, what was it, but otherwise, I would feel horrible if we pronounced guilt on another criminal issue because of shows like Nancy Grace, Pirro, etc. and they were actually innocent.

Otherwise, ya gotta laugh at good jokes about politicians regardless of party. It's no secret I lean left, but the Chelsea Clinton one made me snicker anyway, I couldn't help myself, it was clever.

Yours was awesome, but the best joke I've heard all week was at the White House Correspondent Dinner by President Obama.

Though no secret Obama won't make my "best" list, I don't think he's the worst, and this joke he told was funny:

"Dick Cheney has said that I am the worst president of his lifetime. That's funny because I was thinking the same thing about him"

I 'bout fell out of my chair.

Assembly Of God Churches.May 14, 2012
I have been going to Assembly of God churches for a long time.  I love the fellowship that they provide and a lot of music.  Most of the people who attend these churches are very down-to-earth type of people and good-hearted, generous of spirit.  Oddly enough I was raised in the Catholic church, but I knew for a long time I did not belong there.  Of course that was many years ago and the reliigion was much different then or so I have heard.  The priests seemed distant, ...

My MarriageJun 27, 2015
So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS. Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege. The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...
